The solution to the "Unsupported Hardware" bug is to force NBI to accept the default model id reported back from SMBIOS.

First - grab the model id from Terminal:

sysctl -a | grep model

Mine is "MacBook4,1"

Then right click netbookinstaller, show package contents, navigate to Content/Resources/SupportFiles/machine.plist

and replace "Inspiron 910" or "Inspiron 1011" (depending on Mini 9 or Mini 10 you have) with the number found via the Terminal command.

Mine now looks like this:

<key>Model Name</key>
<string>MacBook4,1</string>

Now NBI should run correctly.

Do you mean that you use all kexts on S/L/E and on Extra/ from your working 10.6.7?

Yes, I didn't make any changes to the Extras folder or the other extensions from 10.6.7, just replaced the 10.6.7 System.kext with the 10.6.8 System.kext and added the most recent version of SleepEnabler.

Okay, two more questions:

1. When using Pacifist, did you use update or replace when prompted where there are files with the same names and extensions exist?

2. Sometimes I have problem with repairing permissions of folders, could Pacifist take care of the permissions of the folders so that the permissions still intact like what it used to be?

Did you use the SleepEnabler from Nawcom? Did it work with the Apple's own Darwin kernel 10.8.0?

When Pacifist asks about updating/replacing items check the box that says 'do this for everything' and hit OK. I ran Apple Disk Utility to repair permissions after using Pacifist, then ran NBI to update the cache and prep the system.

UPDATES:
I could also easily update directly from a 10.6.3 install to 10.6.8 without any problem. If anyone want to do a clean install, feel safe to install it from a retail dvd and jump up to 10.6.8 directly.

(if you want to, mark the file hidden with "SetFile -a V" or "chflags hidden")

10) Reboot again, and this time boot loop will be gone, we are in OS X, sound is working, but sleep is not. Now we need to fix the sleep crash.

11) Run Kext Helper and drop SleepEnabler.kext into its open window or icon

12) Finger crossed. Restart your Dell Mini the last time.

Working for me :-) but one annoying issue that I had before that I don't think is related.

I followed the steps and boots fine, even Sound and Mic input working without problem which is good. My problem is when I reboot, more often than not the trackpad and keyboard are inactive and I need to plug in an external keyboard and mouse to continue... clearly not practical. I have to force shutdown and start over and hope it works - sometimes but usually have to try 2 or 3 times.

When I had this issue before I reinstalled the O/S Combo update (it was 10.6.5 at the time), reran NBI, repaired disk permissions etc but none of this worked. In the end I discovered I had USB Legacy Mode Enabled and when I Disabled it everything was ok.

This time around at 10.6.8, I checked and USB Legacy Mode was still Disabled. I changed it to Enabled, no difference, back to Disabled... sometimes works. I also tried reinstalling 10.6.8 combo, rerunning NBI and repairing disk permissions but no luck.

Not really sure what else I can do and not seen many other people having this issue either. But when I do get the keyboard and trackpad back, everything is fine.
