Question 10.5 0r 10.6 on Vostro A90? - 03-17-2011, 11:08 PM

I just got a Dell Vostro A90, with the intention of installing Mac OS X on it. I will be replacing the 8gb SSD with a 64 gb SSD. I have a few questions: what is the best 64gb SSD for this upgrade? Iíve read mixed results for installing Snow Leopard (10.6) onto the Vostro. Some recommend to stay with Leopard (10.5), while others say there is no problem installing 10.6. Can anyone advise which is correct, and where can I find the most up to date OS X installation guide? Thanks.

Vostro A90 is the exact same machine as the mini 9, except it has a black palm rest, track pad and trim bezel around the screen. Oh, and a different BIOS revision numbering system.

I have several mini 9's and have had no problem running either 10.5 or 10.6 on them, however, you would have to run an older version of NBM/NBI in order to do the 10.5 install. Additionally, legitimate retail copies of 10.5.6 were pretty pricey last I checked, while SL 10.6.3 discs are still around $30. I'd go with SL.

Runcore and SuperTalent SSD's are what I have and I can't tell much performance difference between them myself. Runcore is supposed to be the best, and it has a mini USB port, which some people use to attach it to a Mac and do the install from there.

Oscar has a guide in the General section that is a good one and it shows you what to do if you haven't worked with OS X before.

There are other guides in the Guides section, but some of them are now a bit dated.

Mini 9 | OS X 10.6.7 | NBI 20100616212351| BIOS 05 | 32 GB Runcore | 2 GIGS RAM
10V | OS X 10.6.7 | NBI 20100616212351 |BIOS 06|160 GB|1 GIG RAM| 6 Cell Dell Battery
Functioning Hibernation
