Default Vostro A90 Stec 16GB SSD - replaced 3 times in 1 year crashed again? - 10-23-2010, 05:23 AM

Have a Vostro A90 with Stec 16 GB SSD which was running 10.6.4 nicely. I've replaced (under warranty) the SSD two times and Dell did it the first. So, we are on our 4th SSD. A month or so ago it came up with unable to find operating system on start up and thought the drive had failed again. However, whatever diagnostics I ran seemed to indicate that it was a software error so I "remade" the Hackintosh for the umpteenth time and it functioned fine until a couple days ago when once again it is unable to find the operating system on start up.

I'm trying to get Dell to replace it under the computer lemon law. 5 complete crashes in 1 year? (does anybody know what the lemon law actually is?) I'm not sure how successful I am going to be though. They will get it running again. Any thoughts? Why would an SSD fail so many times? What could be causing this? Is is the SSD or somethings else? Should I extend the warranty for another year? (expires 11/6). Should I just give up and start over? My 6 month old Mini 10v has been great. The Vostro is my husband's computer.

The STEC SSDs don't seem to be all that reliable. I upgraded my main mini 9 to an aftermarket SuperTalent and memory upgrade soon after buying it new and haven't had any issues. Unfortunately, the market is now rather sparse for good aftermarket SSD's for the mini 9/ vostro.

If it was me, I would look for a SuperTalent SSD and ditch the STEC. Others here swear by the RunCore SSD, I just couldn't justify the cost.
