Question Afraid to attempt another 10.5.8 update - 07-03-2010, 06:14 PM

Hi all,

I'm happy to be here, and glad to be a member of the Mini 9 hackintosh family!

Dell Mini 9
64GB Runcore SSD
2GB GeiL Low latency DDR2 533
5300 wifi
Bluetooth
webcam

I had Windows 7 installed on it, and tried to do a dual-boot with OSX
just to end up wiping Windows out all together.

I then had 10.5.6 installed with Dell EFI, and everything was wonderful.
I wish I had imaged that to my 500GB Free agent go USB drive.

One day, (over a Month ago now) I woke up, powered on my mini 9, and nothing, the SSD had just stopped working. I finally got a new one via RMA, yesterday, and went right to task.

I had been without it for over a month or so. When I went to update, I didn't see that(or remember) it was 10.5.8 now, and had just gone ahead and went through the system update.

Once I was finished, a reboot back into 10.5.8 showed my wifi no longer working(Airport was showing no card installed). I figured the install of Dell EFI would fix that, so I ran it. I went in an checked that I did have 10.5.8 on, after a warning came up telling me, that Dell EFI was for 10.5.6 , and I figured that meant 10.5.6 and up.

I thought everything would be fine. My next reboot was into a grey screen with 1" long light black lines across the screen. Only by booting with -x into safe-mode could I get back. to a basic screen.

I scratched the install, and tried again twice more. The same thing happened.

I'm now using it(barely) staying at 10.5.4, but having to use the bootloader CD to get it running.(I may put Dell 123 Ver 8.2 on an old 512MB USB thumb-drive for convenience sake.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance. I'm getting a Macbook Air, after being spoiled by over 6 months of trouble free computing. I'm finally converted

(This coming from an IT Tech who specializes in Network installs, Hardware repairs, and [Too] many Windows repair issues to the point I've lost count.

I don't mind fixing theirs(its what I do), I just want my own hackintosh to work right, as it used too.(I see a neighboor who lives 4 houses around the culdesac, sitting on her back deck, with a macbook Air, and I'm almost there.

If only I had bought that G3 instead

Kind Regards,

DakotaJoe

Anyone? Is there someone out there willing to help a person, who is a complete noob to OS X ? I know it is basically a superior (& super proprietary) version of Linux, having a the same kernel structure and all that.

I've just come to appreciate it more now, in the days of 22 million Viruses, Trojans, and other forms of attack, against Windows(Besides the un-patched vulnerabilities, although Windows 7 is a stronger contender, security wise) and only 1,000 or so against Linux.

I also like the way MAC OS X works, rather unlike,
most linux Distros. (and I've tried many, with only one, I ever found likeable
was OpenSuSe 11)

Okay well I did find an install guide for updating to OS X 10.5.8
Hopefully I can do this, without having to pay someone, to actually do it like I did with my mini 10v(I did the hardware upgrades) and paid them to properly install my Retail Snow Leopard. I know, many might ask why, I want to keep
a Leopard hackintosh. Simple it was my First. I try to keep the first of every
OS I've had since my Dell XPS_230(the two thirty = 230Mhz) Yes, a Windows 95 box that still runs today, and is my best document editor!

Mini 10V Snow Leopard 10.6.2
120GB OCZ Vertex Series OCZSSD2
2GB GeiL low latency DDR2 533
5300 N WiFi(added 3rd antenna wire)
Bluetooth
WWAN

Well, I'm going to go for it. I hope this is as nice a place as I've heard. I'm honestly surprised not one moderator even said hello(even thogh this sin't the area to introduce yourself.

Wish me luck,

Dakotajoe

Hi again,

Whew, okay, I'm updated to 10.5.8, and have installed everything from
Netbook CD 0.8.3's

Airport is back running, Video is nice, and Bluetooth is working.

Audio isn't. So far it's all I've noticed, but I'm just glad I got past the nightmare from the other day. I'm going to look around, & see what I can find on Audio kexts

Default Audio should work - 07-05-2010, 02:50 AM

I've never heard of audio not working on the 10.5.X versions of OSX. You might want to try running NetBookInstaller instead of DellEFI, you're missing months of bug fixes. It would help people here to help you tremendously if you told us what versions of DellEFI you were using as well, but its probably been a while since anyone here used it, so your chances of getting help are going to be low.

Thanks for the reply.

Interestingly, I did ditch DellEFI, for NetbookInstaller 0.8.3, when I found a thread, some where here for updating to 10.5.8
I don't know if there is a, newer version. I'm going to try running the Dell Extensions again.

Also I was just letting it run, but closed the lid, and when I re-opened it, I was met with a black screen. and only the power light came back on, solid.

What do you think?

Thanks,

DakotaJoe

Default Start over - 07-05-2010, 06:15 AM

Honestly I would start over fresh. Use the Mechdrew guide from the attached link. Take notes as you go through the process if anything does seem to match the guide and post back.

Okay, I got the Audio running, so the mini 9 is good now, except for the sleep issue. Strangely, Using Netbook installer 0.8.3 to re-install
Dell extension didn't get it going.
I ended up using something I found from a google of
"No sound on mini 9 hakintoshed"

It's called HDA Fix v3 & Kext helper b7<(the latter being coded in espanol), which let me install the exact Audio kext for the mini 9's ALC268 audio chip.

Last thing was using the Disk Utility to Repair permissions, and then a reboot, and I saw the Audio icon on reboot, so I ran itunes to check it out. whala

Now I just need to find that thread on fixing the Hang for 10.5.8 coming out of sleep mode.

Any info on the Mini 9 sleep hang, would be helpful, just in case I miss finding the thread some how.

Thanks again,

DakotaJoe

PS. I was glad to get the extra 1GB when I got the 2GB stick, but the Runcore(and other high speed SSD's) make all the difference in the world, for these mini's I feel the mini 10v is cooler then it was with a WD Black 320GB 7,200 the what I have in it now. Besides 500GB Seagate Freeagent Go's are not real hard on the battery unless it's a heavy transfer.

If your initial OS X install was a disc with 10.5.4, you aren't using a retail disc, but a OEM drop in disc. The first Retail Leopard disc offered for sale was 10.5.6. These methods are for Retail discs only. Could be a large part of your problem right there.

As far as getting your mini to sleep, did you disable USB Legacy in the BIOS?

The newer versions of NBI/NBM don't support Leopard any longer.

Thanks for the reply.

I bought it from apple's store as:
Apple Mac OS X v.10.5.4 Leopard Family Pack [5 license], disc which came with 2 silver apple stickers, which I used to cover the Front Dell logo's on both mini's.

I'm no MAC expert so it could be OEM, it just has the purple background & black X from top to bottom, and a small silver apple logo near the top.
I'm waiting for a Snow Leopard upgrade pack, to come in the mail, from them now.

I'll disable USB Legacy, and post back.

So how would I go about this from now on?

I used the Netbook Installer .0.8.3 to get this going.
I'll save the Dell EFI I have with that too.
I'm hoping the first runcore going bad was a fluke.

Appreciate the assist!

DakotaJoe

Sleep is working, ( I thought I'd disable the USB legacy in BIOS) so it's almost at 100%.

I can't seem to get my Dell Bluetooth headphones to activate, they only pair up.

CodF4ther- I may just take your advice,[On a clean install] btw I did follow Mechdrew's Install Method the first time.

If I can't get the Headphones to work, by later today, I'll run it again tonight.
I would prefer not to restart when I've gotten this close, but it seems much easier now, then it did when I first did it.

underwhelmed- Its definitely a Retail Disc, I found the receipt from the Apple store, it says retail 10.5.4 right on it, they only added a Sticker to the 10.5.6 according to the sales Rep I called. It looks like the disc on the top on this link: What is Retail? | FAQ | OS X | mechdrew

Well I don't know about the sticker, but the NBI/NBM was designed to work with 10.5.6 and up. Newest version has dropped Leopard support regardless so I would go with a fresh install of SL myself.

I initially tried to just upgrade from a DellEFI Leopard install and had numerous issues. Did a fresh install and now everything works as it should.
