The backup situation on Apple has never been clear, and I don't recall enough to turn it into a wikipedia entry because many others have done this and continue to follow.
What I recall and hold is that DU does fine making images and not direct cloning, having to do with where it takes the backup from. DU goes a good job but the swiss army of backups is:
Carbon Copy Cloner
The owner has documented the shortcomings very well for over a decade now because you get sold on DU being an effective "ghost like" copy and I know it lacks.
I'd suggest reading:

And going from there. You might just want a pure copy of your drive, stored on a timecap that could be remote booted in the event of failure, and this has to be properly created in the first place. Or, if you need something different, there are many more options.
