Yes you can, you need to be using NetbookBootMaker 0.8.4 RC1.
Media makes no difference, be it optical or flash, it's still going to be USB.
I had the same problem with the shutdown message, this is a kernel panic, you were likely using 0.8.3, which is NOT compatible with the mach kernel in 10.6. This can be done without a mac, but it requires the NBI_084RC1.img file, see this guide. Yeah, it's pretty convoluted, I had to do mine in a similar fashion. Bottom line, it's much much easier if you have a Mac to create the USB boot drive. I am currently running 10.6.3 without problems, other than not being able to toggle bluetooth.
Do you have access to a Mac? If not, you can find VMware images floating around the tubes to facilitate this.
