I might have found something that will help you out:
Installing SL on Mini9 with a 8gb SSD
"I had the same problem. I ended up loading OSX onto a USB external drive. Then, slimming it down using xslimmer, monolingual. Then, used disk utility to restore from the USB external to the 8 gb ssd. Worked fine."
I think the disc utility he is talking about is in OSX itself. Hope that helps.

The issue is about the correct way to do this. Can it be done within a running Snow Leopard or do I have to boot from the Install DVD and run disk utility from within the installation environment?
I suppose if you liken it to imaging a Win XP drive, you cannot do it within Windows and have to reboot into DOS so none of the operating system files are locked or in use.
Also still not sure If I should run NetbookBootMaker on the final image to make it bootable in the dell mini

You do it all from the running Snow Leopard install.
Use CCC to backup to the USB drive. Then run NetBookInstaller application from the internal drive and make your USB drive the target. Just select to install the Chameleon bootloader and untick everything else - that makes your USB drive bootable. Job done.
You only have to do that final step the first time after cloning. This is simply because the boot file is NOT copied by CCC, but once it is on your USB drive, it stays there...
