It will install to /S/L/E and backup the original file automatically.

It worked! After updating the kext with KextHelper b7 and crossing fingers (because the re-boot took about 5-10 minutes) everything works as it should now! 10.6.4 with a flawless working sleep function! Fantastic! Thank you CodF4ther!! :-)

#3) Reboot

I'm testing 10.6.4 right now.

Update: Confirming that sleep works on 10.6.4 with this same modification. My Mini 9 is now back to 100% functional again!
This worked perfectly for me - thank you so much for curing my Mini's paralysis upon awaking! Just one detail - after the first restart, I lost the battery icon in the menu bar (couldn't enable it in SP either). A second restart solved that problem and all is well.

Thank you again CodF4ther!

Good to here this is working for you guys. It would still be better if we can get the new version of the code patched and included in NBI.

Long time reader, first time poster.

I saw the post about removing IOATAFamily.kext and using UpdateExtra and did just that (well sort of)

After using the terminal command to see all files and folders, I still didn't see the kext so I just ran UpdateExtra without removing IOATAFamily.kext

This caused Kernel Panics... yay!

Anyway I'm figuring that putting IOATAFamily.kext back into the sys/app/extensions folder would probably fix my issue... the only problem is, I don't have it don't have . So I was wondering if anyone had the 10.6.3 version of that file the could upload so I could grab it. (I'm currently downloading ubuntu netbook edition to put on my flash drive to put it back in there)

Any help would be appreciated!

Where to start...here goes:

#1) Running UpdateExtra without doing anything else should never cause a kernel panic. You must have done something else, if you didn't your problem is unrelated to this thread.
#2) The vanilla version of IOATAFamily.kext goes in /System/Library/Extensions not /sys/app/extensions
#3) If you are using NBI 0.8.4 you should be able to get back to a running system by holding shift when you see the Dell logo at boot, and then typing recovery=y and then pressing enter at the chameleon screen. You could alternately get a terminal by using the USB key that you installed OSX from instead of using Ubuntu. You can restore your vanilla IOATAFamily.kext from there (you did back it up first right?). If you no longer have the original, copy the one from /Extra/Mini9Ext/Extensions to /System/Library/Extensions and reboot.
#4) Once you get the system booting again try the approach using KextHelper explained above.

-------------------------

Going forward people, please keep detailed notes on what steps you are performing it really helps to provide you help. If you get a kernel panic please post details on what the text from the panic says, or even better a screenshot. It also helps to know what other hacks you may have applied.

Its really hard to help someone that provides no more details other than "I have a kernel panic".

For those of you getting kernel panics from the original approach, can you confirm that you clicked the "Update Extensions" button when you ran UpdateExtra and waited for it to finish?

This did not work for me. Now, when I start up, I get an extra screen saying the hibernation file is too old, but then it starts up normally. Sleep still doesn't work. I tried the original method as well, got kernel panics, and was unable to restore from my backup, and so had to reinstall everything. I'd like to fix this, but not at the cost of having to reinstall from scratch. The extra screen isn't a big deal, but it is kind of annoying. Thanks for the suggestions, though.

Edited: tried it twice, and both times, KextHelper hung on close and I had to force quit.

Tried again and ran NBI. Now I am getting kernel panics again. I am running NBI 0.8.3, apparently, and the recovery=y tip didn't work. I guess I am stuck reinstalling again. I will probably just live without it sleeping at this point.

Edited one last time: started a new thread. Did reinstall everything, using 0.8.3 NetBootMaker (that is what was already on my USB drive) but ran NBI 0.8.4 to do the upgrade from 10.6.0 to 10.6.4. This causes kernel panics, but I can start up with the recovery=y trick. But, that's pointless as it thinks there is no airport card. Anyway to fix this?

Please give a more detailed description of what you did prior to seeing the kernel panics. Did you try to do something to fix the sleep issue? Or does it kernel panic after installing NBI 0.8.4?

I should have noticed this when we were debugging the first time. NBI 0.8.4RC1 is incompatible with 10.6.4. To anyone upgrading to 10.6.4 please make sure you follow the instructions in the **OFFICIAL** Mac OS X 10.6.4 Update Thread

To upgrade to 10.6.4 you must install the patched version of NBI installer released by Meklort prior to installing the 10.6.4 update. Using 0.8.3 or 0.8.4RC1 will cause kernel panics on boot if you upgrade to 10.6.4. The patched build of NBI can be downloaded at:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/863180/Netbo...212351.app.zip

If anyone has upgraded to 10.6.4 using NBI 0.8.4 RC1, and is getting kernel panics on boot, you can get into the system by holding down shift as it boots up. When you see the Chameleon boot screen type "recovery=y" and press enter. Once in OSX you can install the patched NBI.

OK - first off, the latest patched version of NBI (8.4RC1 v 20100616212351) works and the combo update (10.6.2 to 10.6.4) works. Sleep problem persists.

Secondly, using kexthelper to replace IOATAFamily.kext S/L/E with the one in the Dell mini 9 extra folder works. So far, so good and sleep works.

BUT Bluetooth doesn't come back one in four times forcing a hard restart, plus I'm really having problems with Acrobat Pro not working and I have temperature issues (typically 56° to 64° and rising to 72° - and then stability problems) and speed issues, too.

So, with regret, have rolled back yet again to 10.6.2. Mini 9 is my friend again and all works splendidly; fast, reliable - even the VOIP headset works. I really don't think I'm going to be able to get it right in 10.6.4 and I've noticed my (older) MacBook Pro also has stability problems, typically crashing out in Safari. Don't know if it's because the software isn't the latest (CS3, Office 2004, whatever), the age of the hardware, or if it's the OS.

Choosing to stay less than cutting edge.
