Default Hacks, 9's and life. - 03-09-2010, 07:11 PM

About a year ago, I got the mini 9 and put the OSX hack on it for my son.
I cant say I have been super happy with it, as it seems to be very sluggish and constantly beach balling.

The worst part is just trying to get it to play a video.

Now I have the 16GB version with 1 gig of ram, and here is my question.

Would a ram upgrade make any difference to the general performance of the laptop?
Or do you think this could be down to the old OS hack or just poor hardware (graphics card etc)?
The main role of the laptop is to play videos, surf the net and maybe skype ..... which it doesnt really do well with any of those applications.

/ Cheers

Seems like you've answered you own question. My 9 does fine for all the things you listed and the extra GB didnt make a huge difference. So I'd say you're standards are prolly higher then a little atom will satisfy. The mini I saw running XP was worse than my OSX one for certain. Maybe W7 is better.

mini 9 | 2GB RAM | 16GB STEC SDD | BIOS A06, USB Legacy OFF | No Bluetooth | OSX 10.6.7 | NBI 0.8.5pre w/ ALC268 | Broadcom2Airport
MINI Cooper '02 | 1.6L | CVT | Moonroof | Red w/ White Stripes

Any ideas if extra ram (2gb total) makes any difference?

Only helped marginally but then my swap is to an SSD. I can watch video with VLC just fine, even before the additional memory. Flash video and Netflix are both choppy.

I have 2GB of Ram and an SSD, and love the performance for web surfing. You have to be aware of the limitations of the DM9 to fully appreciate it as a netbook running OSX. Playing video that is stored on the SSD is not a problem, playing video from the web is not very smooth and not recommended, so I do that on my mac mini HDTV set up.

DM9 | 64GB Runcore SSD | 2GB RAM | BIOS A03 (USB LEGACY OFF, USB WAKE OFF, BT OFF)
OSX 10.6.4

I installed OSX on mine with 16gb and 2gb ram. Later, I installed OSX on my daughter's with 16gb and 1gb ram. Took about 20 minutes longer, for whatever it's worth. Eventually, I put 2gb in her's, too.
