Upgrading to BIOS A06 without dual boot - 02-22-2010, 06:43 AM
I'm running 10.6.2 on my mini 9 with BIOS A05. I wanted to upgrade to A06 but Dell only has a windows installer for A06. I figured out a way.
First, You need a USB thumb drive
Second, you need a windows PC
Third, download the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool. This allows you to create a bootable USB disk. Get it here;
HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool - v2.1.8 Download - EXTREME Overclocking
Fourth, download the windows 98 files for the bootable disk from;
Windows 98 System Files Download - EXTREME Overclocking
Follow the directions on the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool to create the bootable USB drive.
Download the A06 BIOS application from the Dell support site onto your Windows PC. Run the installer and it will copy the files to c:\windows\temp\winphlash and then it will fail.
copy the file BIOS.ROM from the winphlash directory to the USB Thumb Drive.
Rename the BIOS.ROM file on the USB Thumb Drive to BIOS.WPH
Download the latest PHLASH16.exe file from;
PHLASH16.EXE - FTP Mirror Search (Downloads)
Copy PHLASH16.EXE to the USB Thumb Drive
Eject the USB Thumb Drive from your Windows PC.
Put it in your Dell Mini 9. Boot or reboot the Mini 9 and press 2 to enter the BIOS setting. Enable USB BIOS Legacy Support from the Advanced tab. Press F10, Save your configuration and exit.
As the Dell boots press 0 to enter the Boot Options Menu and select removable USB drive.
Your system should have now booted into DOS.
Make sure your battery is charged and the Mini is plugged into A/C.
Enter PHLASH16 and press <enter>
The system will now flash your BIOS to A06. When it is done the mini will reboot.
Don't forget to go back in and turn off the Legacy USB Support. You can also look and see that the BIOS is at A06.
So far my system is working great. WiFi, Bluetooth, USB, SD Card Slot, sleep, sound, etc.
Why did I do the upgrade? No reason....my Dell Mini 9 is an experiment.
Hope this helps some others out!

You went through an awful lot of unnecessary work.
