OS X should not give you worse battery life than windows.
I have OS X and Ubuntu right now, the battery times seem similar on the stock battery. ~4 hours just light browsing with wifi, lowered brightness, and other local tasks. Windows 7 I've tried in the past, seems to also be about the same. If I play video/flash I get ~2.5-3.
Correct, there is no mic support with the latest Netbook Installer. However, you can get all audio to work fine with the following assuming you are running 10.6.2:

As for anything else... um.. hibernate? That's about all I can think of..

If "what doesn't work" is a concern from the get go, I might suggest not doing OSX. I love my mini9 and "it all works" but it takes fuddling and it's not "supposed to" in Apples opinion, and its a smaller community... if you don't sincerely want OSX why bother?
