Default Fn Brightness controls - 01-19-2010, 07:01 PM

hello, i am running a mini9 osx machine 10.5.8 i believe.

I would like to be able to adjust the brightness of my screen using Fn + "9" or "0" but it's not working. my FN volume controls work fine.

is this something common that can be fixed w/o the chance of creating system instability?

Default Not a OSX problem. - 01-24-2010, 12:23 AM

NBI doesn't support brightness control keys on a Dell mini 9. That means OSX does not intercept FN+8/9. Instead brightness control with these keys is done completely by the BIOS.
(Proof: When you use the volume control, the typical OS X volume bezel will show, when you use brightness control, there is no bezel.)

In your case, try the following:
- boot into another OS (i.e. some live linux system from USB) - can you use the brightness control there? if yes, its the OS
- if not, try to upgrade your bios, or try to "repair" it with the same version

Dell Mini 9 | Mac OS X 10.5.8 | 1 GB RAM | 16 GB Runcore SSD | BIOS A05

Not sure what you are saying Xamian. Those keys have always worked for me, but I started with 10.6.

mini 9 | 2GB RAM | 16GB STEC SDD | BIOS A06, USB Legacy OFF | No Bluetooth | OSX 10.6.7 | NBI 0.8.5pre w/ ALC268 | Broadcom2Airport
MINI Cooper '02 | 1.6L | CVT | Moonroof | Red w/ White Stripes

Yeah, they have always worked for me as well. 10.5.6 to 10.5.8 and 10.6.0 to 10.6.2 always worked fine.

Mini 9 | OS X 10.6.7 | NBI 20100616212351| BIOS 05 | 32 GB Runcore | 2 GIGS RAM
10V | OS X 10.6.7 | NBI 20100616212351 |BIOS 06|160 GB|1 GIG RAM| 6 Cell Dell Battery
Functioning Hibernation

Back up Mini 9| OS X 10.6.7| NBI 20100616212351| BIOS 05 | 32 GB SuperTalent | 2 GIGS RAM

they are working for me, but not through OSX.. i mean, no little pop up with a sun logo telling me im dialing down my brightness... but it does work.. the bios apparently picks up the keystrokes and dials down the backlight of my im happy with it..
