Question Upgrade to "10.5.7" fails - 01-19-2010, 02:50 PM

I have Dell Mini9 with 64 gB RunCore drive operating successfully in 10.5.6.
When I try to upgrade to 10.5.7, I boot into safe mode and use an external flash drive with the update and run the update. After a while I get the message "Update Successful"
When I restart to get out of safe mod, the boot proceeds normally until the time when the desktop is supposed to appear. I get a white screen with many slanted black lines

I have rebooted, done all I can find to do but can only boot successfully in safe mode.

I restore the RunCore drive using a bootible backup created on an external USB Hard Drive with Synchronize Pro and I'm back to where I started with 10.5.6

Is there a download or some file I should use to fix the problem?

May I ask why you ran the installer in Safe mode?

Default Why I Ran in Safe Mode - 01-19-2010, 09:40 PM

I originally tried with normal mode. It ran to "running installer script" and hung there for four hours. I had to force shut down and then it wouldn't boot. I reloaded from the backup and tried safe mode.

I just tried Normal again and it finished the installation, but when I reboot it is he same screen i got with safe mode, namely all white with many slanted short nearly horizontal lines.

I also tried the combo update from 10.5.6 to 10.5.8 with the same results.

Have you tried repairing the disk and repairing permissions with Disk Utility via Leopard "disk"?

I booted from my backup and used the disk utility there. It said drive was ok. Repaired a bunch of permissions, rebooted from RunCore, still bad screen

SUCCESS, I re-did the update, then booted in safe mode and ran NetBook Installer. Restart and everything works. So, I guess you have to run NetBook installer after every update.

I am also very new to this, but with all the expert help on this forum, I now have a fully functional OS X 10.5.8 running on my Dell Mini 9.
I got the gray screen as well, but learned on this forum to press the "-" key, you will see a small text dialogue on the bottom left of the screen, then type"x" (without the quotations of course) so that it is "-x" which will boot you onto safe mode, then run the installer, NBI or DellEfi2a5, then re-boot, and it will work normally.
The most stressful problem I had was trying to use extended desktop! I accidentally switched on mirroring...never do that! and it was a hassle to get it to work again. But through the professional posts on this site I found this link: Fabin Caas
which had an app that even solved that problem!

Much Thanks to all the techs on here who take the time to help us "noobs" out!! Thanks again everyone!
