before updating to 10.6.2 make sure you run the latest NetBookInstaller on the system, otherwise you might run into trouble.
The hang at startup may be gone with that, too (test it yourself; i'm not sure); if not there is a fix entering some "UHCIReset" somewhere, you'll find it easily searching the forums.

1- Check out my guide for a way to increase boot up reliability:
DellMini9 Runcore SSD/10.6.1/NI 083 RC3 (Full Sound, Sleep, Reliable Restart!)
2- Good job ordering the runcore, it makes installing OSX as easy as possible if you have access to a mac machine (check my guide for more info on that as well). Since you're in med school Im sure you could borrow one from a fellow student for a couple of hours to get the install done.
3- Dual booting is hard to do, as far as Im concerned, not impossible, but time consuming, FYI.
