Default Mini 9 won't boot off of USB - any ideas? - 12-16-2009, 01:55 AM

I am trying to set up Snow Leopard on a mini 9 using the instructions for installation with a Mac running tiger that I found here,
http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/mac-...ng-system.html

I was able to create the 2 USB sticks I needed, but my Mini 9 won't boot off of them, even though I have tried pressing 0 and (alternatively ) 2 to force the Mini 9 to boot off the USB and not the internal drive.

After Ubuntu boots up, it shows the 2 USB sticks as being loaded, so I don't think this is a hardware problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is USB legacy support enabled in the BIOS? Can you boot off the drive on another PC?

Thanks for the help. USB legacy support is enabled, but I have not tried booting a PC off the USB sticks. It had not at all occurred to me to try that. I presume you are suggesting that because it would be a way to confirm that I did in fact set them up correctly?

Yeah. I'm trying to find out where the problem is. The flash drives (the data on them) or the Mini.

Even if correctly setup for OSX, the flash drives may not boot up completely on another PC (very different hardware than a Mini 9), but you should at least be able to choose USB from the BIOS boot menu, and get a partial boot.

You could also try a completely different testing strategy. Make one of the flash drives into a Linux LiveUSB drive, or Windows USB installer, and see if they'll boot.
