My external 500GB 2.5" USB drive from Western Digital mounts fine on my MacBook, but I can't even see it it in Disk Utilities on my mini 9 10.6.1. Thoughts? |

Try checking the system log after plugging the drive in. Any relevant messages? Mini 1012 | SSD | Intel 6200 Wifi | Ubuntu 11.10 64bit |

some 2.5 inch drives dont work with the mini that well. Reading older posts, people always suggest to use the usb port nearest to the power socket on the mini9. I cant get my wd and another 2.5 inch external drives to work on this one (both drives make clicking sounds), or even with a y cable to give extra power!! |

The true problem here is for what the 2.5" USB Hard drives without external power supply drain more current that an USB port can supply; the specification for an standard USB 1.x/2.0 port is 5V @ 500mA and several 2.5" harddrives into enclosure need about 550~600mA and some times more. Here are some examples of typical hard drives found in the 2.5" enclosures:   In some laptops/pc the usb ports allow drain almost 1A but is not standard, and where the USB ports have limited current those HDD need several re-plugs for work or simply fail. |

Nothing appears in Console. No improvement with one of those cables with two-into-one connectors, either. The drive does show up in System Profiler as "Vendor-Specific Device". The only things that appear to be interesting there are: Product ID: 0x1618 ... Current Required (mA): Unknown (Device has not been configured) Looks to me as though power isn't the issue. I have found reports of similar problems with these drives on other OSes. |

Can't boot from the drive either. So either firmware or power draw. Also noticed that the right-side USB port doesn't work for anything. It appears not to be producing power, even. |

Hey, that is a bit of a nuisance for you. I have had no problem with reading various external USB HDs on my Mini 9. However, I have had problems with reading external optical drives - eventually I hit on one that works - an LG. I am not sure what was causing my problem, either.  |
