Default No audio out and video out problems... please help! - 11-05-2009, 11:05 PM

Hi all. This is my first post on the forum so thanks in advance for any help.

I'm running 10.6.1 on a mini 9 8GB SSD with netbook 8.3 to iron out the niggles. With the mirror friendly kext enabled i can use the external monitor port with no trouble whatsoever except there is no video in VLC (it works in quicktime) and overall video performance is not really good enough. It's all fine with the option unchecked but I get the infamous lines on the screen thing going on. Any ideas how I can fix this? It didn't change when I upgraded to 10.6.1.

Also the audio out and internal mic don't work but the sound seems fine. None of this would really matter if i didn't buy the mini 9 to play video onto my tv while i use my mac air to mess around on the internet!

Thanks for any help.

Audio out via headphone jack doesn't work unless you run the VooDooAudio kext, which causes static in many cases.

If it was me, I would use the mini for the web and use the air on the TV.

The minis are lacking in their video due to the chip sets and processor used.

you bought a really underpowered computer to do a really processor intensive task? makes no sense.

I would sell the mini 9 and buy a mac mini on ebay.. i've got a new one on my tv running plex, i love it, hd, 7.1 surround with a wiimote for a remote.. putting a macbook air on a tv seems like a waste of a good laptop.

The video is fine just as long as the mirror friendly kext isnt enabled. The weird thing is that with it enabled there is no video with vlc but there is video in quicktime... and I hate quicktime.

I'll install the voodoo kext and see what happens. I bought the mini 9 instead of a mac mini because they are about half the price and i don't have the funds for that. I still wanna figure out how to get all this sorted as I don't want to be moving laptops all the time and i use the air for work.

Thanks

The Mini 9 is half the price, but it is for a different purpose. The Mini Mac would be a better choice for what you are trying to accomplish.

Clearly sarcasm is not easy to discern without using smiley post icons, which I hate.

Have you tried using extended desktop, rather than mirroring, and just drag VLC to the external monitor?

The reason why quicktime plays while vlc doesn't is because with the mirroring kext (in 10.6) hardware acceleration isn't supported. You can either disable mirroring with that monitor (extended mode) and then remove the mirroring kext or you can change vlc's preferences so it doesn't try to use hardware acceleration.

The mirroring kext won't be included with NBI for too long. Odds are 0.8.3 or 0.8.4 will be the last version with it included.
