I have the same symptoms as rblanco (and Tbonius).
OSX 10.5.6 install fine. Immediately updated (10.5.8 combo update on disk, not software update). Then, use Chameleon (Netbook CD 0.8.3 RC3) to boot into SSD, then grey screen with "star" symbol "spinning," then blue screen as normal, but end up with grey screen with scrambled lines (no icons or anything visible). Tried booting into SSD holding Shift. Tried booting into SSD holding Fn-F8. Cannot boot into safe mode.
Did you find an answer rblanco? Tbonius?

In case it helps - same thing happened to me.
jxanthony is right - you need to go into safe boot.
But it wasn't obvious (at least to me, how to do this.)
I was following this:
NetbookInstaller 3: Installation via External DVD Drive using NetbookCD | Guides | OS X | mechdrew
Very nice guide but I suggest that the fact that so many us need to do the safe boot after the 10.5.8 combo update should be mentioned in there.
As well as how to do it, please.
At the Netbook CD screen where you can choose your boot device
Subsequent normal boots should fine after this.
For me I got side-tracked trying to find how to do the danged safe-boot. I knew typing the down-arrow in the boot screen gave you a boot menu, and I tried pretty much all the variations there, figuring one must amount to "safe" ... you got 'em all there, your single boot, verbose boot, etc but no "safe".. so of course, none of that worked...
Oh well, hope this helps someone...
(To clarify in case it matters, mine situation was a fresh install of 10.5.6 on a 10v, followed by an install of the 10.5.8 combo, before any run of NBI.)

What ultimately worked for me was the opposite. After I had installed the fresh 10.5.6 build, I then ran the Netbook installer program (and before the 1st Chameleon boot up I made sure to disable legacy USB support in the Bios as previously I had it enabled because I was booting from USB.) I know it is not in the sequential order of the installation steps but it worked for me.
Once my Dell Mini was booting on its own, then I installed my previously downloaded combo updates, following each update with executing the Netbook installer program.
That is what worked for me, and I have been able to maintain 10.5.8 updated with no problems so far. No more grey screen of death with black scrambled lines.
