Default NetbookCD 1.1 and Snow Leopard not working - F5 does nothing - 10-20-2009, 12:58 PM

Hey guys - got a USB DVD drive, burned NetbookCD 1.1 and have retail Snow Leopard CD.

I boot NetbookCD 1.1 and I get the yellowish screen where it says switch DVDs and hit FN+F5... but nothing happens.

Whats up?

Ok so I had to like unplug the USB drive at some point while sitting at the NCD screen. Now I am getting a screen with D1 and a little circle spinning around. CD drive is making noise... buttt.... not sure whats going on.

Whats this D1 screen and is this right?

It took me about 8 tries before it would take. I unplugged and I would hear the disk spin but it would not load. Lastly, I hit F5 without Fn and held down shift as it was starting to spin. Don't know why or how ---- but it worked.

Yes. I kept getting the D1 screen and no movement. Disk drive would spin for about 10 seconds and nothing. Like I said it took me about 8 times and once I held the shift key it ran.

I think the shift key is invoking Safe Mode, similar to putting -x in the boot prompt. Safe Mode is totally fine for installing.

As for the hanging screen, DVD drives hate Mac OS X, I don't know of any other way to put it. Just try *several* more times to get it to work, try cleaning it too. Also, there is a disconnect trick, mentioned in the guide (and possibly the Readme file.)

(Oh, and it's not a D1. )

Haha I see its an MD now. But ok so I managed to get up into OS X Snow leopard! Whooo!

Then I installed the Combo Update, restarted.... and now what? It says no operating system found. Do I boot off the NetbookCD thing again? I don't know what to do at this point

Uh oh - rebooted, because it wasn't doing anything, booted off NetbookCD, chose SnowLeopard installation, and i get a:

"You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until it turns off"

What'd I do?

I did:

- Installed the SL disk, took almost an hour and right before it loaded it said it failed. Supposed to happen.

- Shut off computer. Rebooted using NetbookCD. And this time I chose the OS X drive I had named during installation.

- Downloaded the SL updates from the Apple site.

- Ran netbook installer RC3. I had burned it to a disk and ran it off the disk.

- Turned off computer. Restarted.

- It booted and I was running with SL with minor trackpad issues. I downloaded NBI RC3 and re-ran it and I was good to go. No issues.

when did you run the SL update? Once you booted up from the OSX drive you picked, or after you installed Netbook Installer RC3?
