This is turning out to be a much more difficult task than I had hoped. The install onto the 16 gb SD card has taken hours and the iMac is currently frozen on a grey screen. I'm waiting it out for a bit. I'm assuming the SD card is slow or something. I'm very patient.
For the record, I have already attempted NetbookInstaller methods 1 and 2 on Mechdrew's site. Both methods have been attempted with my copy of OS X Snow Leopard, mounted onto my external HD or 16 gb SD card.
Method 1 on the new iMac fails when NetbookBootMaker 0.8.3 RC3 crashes when I try to run it.
Method 2 fails after I try it out on the Vostro. I plug my smaller 2 gb SD card (via a USB adaptor) loaded with the NBI_083RC3 file + the drive I've mounted the OS X installer onto. I use my older G4 iBook with Tiger to do this. The Vostro recognizes the bootloader, but does not recognize the external HD with Snow Leopard on it.
I believe all my BIOS settings are correct. I'm running BIOS A04, but I didn't think that would be an issue.
All three of these (including the currently hanging iMac install onto the 16 gb SD card) install attempts appear to be isolated issues, so clearly the problem here is me ;-)
Oh well, I'm patient. I'll figure it out. Any advice is greatly appreciated, though.

Well I'm done waiting for this grey screen to go away. I'm gonna abort and try this again with what will hopefully be a faster external HD, rather than the 16 gb SD card.
The excitement continues!
I'm going to do a dance of joy and drink a lot of beer when this finally works.

It appears that I was actually trying to use the *netbookinstaller* app for method 1. I just downloaded the *netbookbootmaker* app. Crossin my fingers here. I think I may have solved my problem.

Yup! That was definitely my problem. OS X installer boots up fine on my Vostro, but now I see that I do need to slim it down a bit before install. I'm going to attempt yidakee's method again or modify the OSInstall.mpkg file.
Just seeing the grey apple logo on my Vostro was pretty exciting, even if I'm not there yet. I'm enjoying documenting my process here, even if I'm talking to myself in an empty thread. And maybe some of this stuff will be handy for someone else.

And here's a follow up. I have almost everything working correctly. The Snow Leopard install is only 4 gb, leaving me plenty of room even on the small stock 8 gb SSD. Runs super fast with no problems at all.
Sleep took a little bit to figure out, but I got it...though it doesn't seem to go to sleep like a real mac laptop. It seems to stay warm like it's still running. And it does this thing where the screen comes on for a second after I open it, then it goes off, then comes back on.
There seem to be a few other strange issues here and there but it's no big deal. I expect some odd behavior due to the nature of what's essentially a hack.
Here's a picture of the Vostro with my old ibook.
I'll probably continue to post thoughts and observations about the Vostro and the OS X install over there on flickr, as well as new pictures. Can't wait to get my new Psyopper sleeve! Gonna be uploadin' some photos of that as well.
Good times y'all. Merry x-mas and happy mini-hacking to all of you.
