Default **Solved** Can't browse internet with Firefox or Safari while connected to home LAN - 09-06-2009, 02:05 PM

This problem just started 2 days ago. The last time I connected I was at my school and needed to use the internet. I connected and a pop up message came up about certificates so I accepted. It worked while I was at school but when I got home I could no longer browse the internet using my home LAN (WIFI). My ISP is VZW FIOS and my other laptop connects fine as well as my Xbox 360.

I tried to narrow down the certificates by trying to use Safari to see if it was just a problem with Firefox. Neither of the two work. I'm able to tether my AT&T phone to the mini and use the two browsers to browse. I can't use Safari or Firefox when I'm connected to my home internet connection.

What is the issue?

I am going to take a guess you use OSX 10.5.x?

It could be that your school uses 802.11X authentication, which has gotten itself embedded in your wireless profile somehow and this is stopping you getting online at home.

They may also use proxies to access the internet, which is stopping you getting online in Safari & Firefox - you don't say if you are getting online anyway using another internet connected app like Mail or iChat however, which wouldn't tend to use a web proxy and would point to this being the problem.

Either way, the easiest way to try and fix this is to create a brand new "location" for your home use, which will start with no proxy settings.

Go to System Preferences > Network
Click on Locations > Edit Locations
Click the '+' to create a new blank profile, name it "Home"
Connect to your wireless network as normal - you should be able to get connected fine now.
Still in Network, click the "Advanced" button for Airport properties. Find the "Proxies" tab, and make sure everything is blank here.

OK & Apply out of everything, and fire up Safari - hopefully this has fixed your problem!

(For Firefox, you need to go to its own Preferences > Advanced > Network, and make sure you have direct connection ticked.)

Then, when you get to school, switch your location back to whatever it was, and you will be good to go.

Followed all those steps and they didn't work. Airport is connected to my SSID but if I open up safari or firefox it says I'm not connected to the internet. I tried to open up skype and adium thinking it was a proxy issue but those don't sign on as well. I restarted my Mini already as well.

Right now I'm tethering my AT&T phone to my mini and both browser as well as all applications dependent on connectivity work. My Xbox 360 has no issue connecting to Call of Duty Modern Warefare for pownage. My GF has no issue on her laptop but she's running vista. My Macbook Pro has no issue connecting as well.

I also tried to delete airport and add it again in network prefs. I deleted all the BT PAN connections, Ethernet, BT etc. I live by this little machine for work, school, and play. Trying to get this up and running by the time school starts again on tuesday as it's impossible to get a reserve a seat at a computer in the library at school.
Any other ideas?

by the way the specs of my Mini are in my signature. Bringing my Macbook Pro to school is something I will never do because of slippery hands. Besides you can't trust lockers anymore nowadays.

..Plus they weigh a ton in comparison!

OK, are you getting an IP and DNS OK?

In network preferences, click on Airport, then you should see an IP address there.

Open Safari or Firefox, enter [url]http://128.243.40.30/ - you should see the Uni of Nottingham web page, which means DNS might not be working properly. If you don't, and you have an IP other than 169.x.x.x, can you try connecting via Ethernet to your home router?

Do you have access to another wireless network? Starbucks for example? If you have, try connecting to it and browsing - if it works then the problem lies with your home router (despite everything else working! It does happen...)

Power down your router, and other attached devices. Power up the router, then try browsing with your Mini9 before powering up everything else and checking they still work.

If you still can't browse at home via WiFi, try giving your home router a new SSID and then connect to that with the Mini9.

Hopefully, something up there should help, or at least narrow down possible causes for you.

I will try that. You said I should change my SSID but the router I have is a FIOS router that comes pre programmed with SSID & WEP. I'm going to buy another router possibly nethear or cisco because the VZW router blows donkey balls. I get poor signal and I'm 2 rooms over. Last I checked today I was getting an IP address and even clicked to renew lease to see if it would generate a new IP but tht still bought me nowhere. I'll go shopping today and hopefully I can snag a good router for sale for cheap. I'll let ku know how that turns out.

Added code tags to clean up your post. In the future please put long outputs in [code] tags to make things easier to read and follow. It also helps so we don't all have to scroll through a huge output

OK well your not getting an IP address from the router. en0 is assigning it's own address due to the fact it cannot connect get one from your (DHCP) router.

Have you tried to restart the router if not try that first?

If you have a spare network cable & your not to far from the router (I'm not familiar with your ISP or router & maybe your router has no switch ports) you could try connecting the cable (RJ45) from your machine directly into one of the routers switch ports. Then wait a few secs (say 60) & try to ping 4.2.2.2.

There's many ways to 'skin a cat' in this situation & without overloading you with commands try that first.
