Default How's the update to 10.5.8 going on the mini 9? - 08-19-2009, 09:10 PM

How's the update to 10.5.8 using Software Update panel on the mini 9 going? Have there been any issues? I just ran it on my Mac and all seems fine with it. I'm ready to update my mini 9.

I think the update is going pretty smoothly for the Mini 9 users

I can't remember if I've used to Software Update feature to update the OS while installed in the mini 9. I know I've ran the SU to update apps and things. Does it work just like the Mac or is there anything else needed, like using DellEFI before or after a 10.5.x update?

I updated earlier this week. I used Software Updates for all but the actual 10.5.8 update, but downloaded and used the Combo Updater for the OS update as I believe there have been fewer problems reported when updating that way.

After the update was complete, I simply needed to run NetBookInstaller to do its magic, and then loaded the "vanilla" SMBIOSresolver.kext file to fix the power indicator/preferences problem.

It's been a couple of days now, with no problems whatsoever.

Thinking of trying Dropbox? Use this referal link and we'll both get an extra 250MB of storage.

Could you elaborate some on how you did the update on the Dell 9. I had severe issues trying to get everything working with 10.5.8, and that dell 10 thread is very confusing as I can't tell what is needed for the dell 9 vs the dell 10. (Lots of dsdt patches, I'm not sure even what you can use to edit them with.)

Lets start with the basic, 10.5.7 working install.

1. Install combo updater to 10.5.8

2. Ran NetbookInstaller. I tried to use the .82 RC 3 version, did you use the .81 version instead? Any particular options you ran, or just stuck with the defaults?

3. SMBIOSresolver.kext file. I am unsure how to manually replace this file. I don't know where to add it once I download it. Does this have to do with the dsdt file modifications? How are these files modified if needed? (I'm very confused on this step.)

4. Stec SSD sleep issues. I read that many with the stec SSD had problems after 10.5.8. I believe a kext was updated in another thread to fix this issues. Did you apply this fix? (I believe that is one of the changes in the Netbookinstaller .82 RC 3.)

5. Did you use the bluetooth terminal mod on this install? (I had issues where I couldn't get it to work after upgrade, I am not sure if I was doing something wrong, if the .82 RC 3 or 10.5.8 broke the on/off settings.) The bluetooth terminal mod is working great on my 10.5.7, so it is very weird that I couldn't get it to manually work on 10.5.8 (using .82 RC3, that could also have something to do with it.)

6. Did you do the dvd player app fix to allow external dvd players to run using the mac app? (I doubt this would be an issue, as every other times I have run the combo updater I simply had to redo it and never had any issues.)

Sorry to ask all these questions, but after all the failed installs I had this week, I have lots of questions before I attempt to upgrade to 10.5.8 again. (Time machine saved me, I was able to revert to 10.5.7 after each failed attempt.)

When I run NetbookInstaller, I can't select the destination volume (i.e. nothing shows up in the drop down menu). Am I doing something wrong? I already updated to 10.5.8 but I wanted to run the SMBIOSresolver.kext to fix the power indicator/preferences problem

0.8.1 cannot be installed on any version after 10.5.7. Try using 0.8.2 RC4. It also includes the battery fix with it (and source code is in svn if you want to see the changes). On a side note, RC4 is not final however 0.8.2 should officially be released in a few days.

Well, I tried using 0.8.2 RC4 but after it installed it didn't reboot automatically. So I rebooted manually and now I just get the blue screen right before login. I tried booting into safe mode but that didn't work either!

Sorry for the delay in responding. Maybe I have it easier than some, since I've never experienced any problems with audio or sleep (I have a RunCore), and I don't have Bluetooth. My process was
  1. Back up my working 10.5.7 to a USB drive with Time Machine and ensure I had my bootable NetBookMaker'd 10.5.6 install flash drive handy, just in case. (My 10.5.7 setup was updated from DellEFI to NetBookInstaller 0.8.1 a couple of weeks ago, FYI)
  2. Run the 10.5.8 Combo Updater.
  3. Reboot to Safe Mode.
  4. Run NetBookInstaller 0.8.2RC3 to update the DSDT file.
  5. Install the SMBIOSResolver kext using Kext Helper.
  6. Reboot normally. Wireless was not working, but I had read many reports of this happening on the first boot after updating.
  7. Reboot normally again. Wireless came up and everything appears to be working normally.
  8. Apply the latest security update via Software Updates.
  9. Reboot.
  10. Enjoy 10.5.8!
Hope that helps.
