Whoa! Does this mean that you can boot from an SD card in the SD card slot?

Must go and try this ...

Later ...

First tests with a cheapo SD card did not work. The removable bit apparently did not change. I tried reformatting it in NTFS format as well as FAT32 with no success.

Even later still.

Did not work with a Kingston class 4 8GB SDHC card either.
Or a Kingston 8GB Data Traveller USB stick.

Giving up for now.

Works with most well known SD and USB Sticks.
Whoa!! Nice Find. By using the Flip Removable Bit, this should allow Wubi to see the SD Card as a another fixed disk and allow Ubuntu to be installed to dual boot using the SD card. I can't wait to hear the results on this and to actually test it myself. I sure hope this will work with the 16GB A-Data SDHC card I have on order.

Here's a short article on the tool itself: http://www.pendriveapps.com/2008/05/01/ ... -bit-tool/

I tried to use Lexar Bootit tools on my Sandisk SD Ultra II 16GB, but no effect. Not sure where did I go wrong. Anybody did it successfully?

I couldn't get it to work either... I had to use the first method that was listed in this post. It ended up working perfectly after I figured out how to do it.

The hard way:

You have to tell Windows to optimize your SD slot for performance instead of quick removal:

1. Right-click on My Computer and select Properties
2. Click on the Hardware Tab
3. Click on the Device Manager button
4. Click on the little + next to Disk Drives
5. Right-click on USB2.0 CardReader SD0 USB Device and select Properties
6. Click on the Policies tab
7. Click on the Optimize for performance circle
8. Click on OK

I'm not sure if you have to reboot or not. Once you format the card as NTFS you can go and change it back to Optimize for quick removal, if you like.
I tried this on my new Adata 16GB SDHC, but the "Optimize for Performance" circle is already checked and that whole area is grayed out.

So,.......guess I'm stuck with FAT32

I use a Transcend 16GB SDHC formatted to NTFS to store MP3s and stuff like that.
Works just fine for media files.

Default booting from SDHC - 12-23-2008, 09:27 AM

Regarding booting, it does not make any differnece if SD slot is regarded as fixed media, or removable media.

AFAIK, we will NEVER be able to boot from SD slot because SD slot interface is not USB but propietary.
If doable, it would require a major BIOS rewrite
If you really want to boot from a SD card, you have to use an USB external Card reader

best regards

Is one brand better than another? Is class 6 the same -- is the "turbo" marked on some class 6 cards really faster than a normal class 6, etc.?
