portable power units revisited - 06-07-2009, 10:29 PM
Thought I would share what I have found out about car and travel power adaptors for my Dell Mini. I know this has been addressed in a couple of other forums but I have these adaptors in my hand and have tested them both with my DVM and on my Mini.
I spend time in Southern Africa once/twice per year and bought my mini for email and to use as a Garmin based GPS unit – the main idea was to cut down on gadgets I need to bring along with me. Therefore I was most interested in duel voltage wall/air and car power units
Two of these powers systems are listed for the Acer Aspire One but the tips appear to be identical to the stock Dell. They all fit tightly in the Dell powerport.
For comparison the output voltage on my stock Dell adaptor was 19.3 VAC
First unit: Wall adapter with 4 plug sets (the most common for overseas travel) found in the UK at
Tested it using 120 and 240 VAC and the output was 19.2 volts DC
Second Unit: Car adapter from the same place in the UK (FYI - once I ordered these it took only 8 days to arrive to Southern California and shipping was only $3 USD!)
Output voltage with car running was 19.5 VAC
Third Unit: Kensington Wall/Air ultra thin Notebook Power adapter Using tip # D.
I spent some time with the Kensington rep and this is the tip recommended for the Acer Aspire One and is also listed on the newer Kensington power brick instructions to fit the Dell Mini.
Output voltage was 19.3 VAC using tip D. this one unit also has an airplane adapter cable to fit most airplane power ports – I have not had the opportunity to test it yet – that will happen later this summer
- Please do not confuse this with the older Kensington Wall/auto/Air ultra portable Notebook power adapter. They do not make a tip specific for either the Acer or Dell minis to fit that power unit–
Hope this helps anyone looking at alternative power systems…

Hi, you mention that some adapter output 19.3 and 19.5V did you use them with you mini ? any problems ?
I am asking as I have 3 dell power adapter for D420/D630 series which output 19.5V, only the tip is different.
If the mini takes 19.5v then I would just make adapter for these power adapter and be done. I have the travel adapter from dell and it's great. I wish I can use it with the mini.
