Default Memory (RAM) Upgrade - 09-16-2008, 06:12 PM

I see Crucial are jumping in on the bandwagon, offering a 2GB memory card targeted directly at the mini 9, doubling the 1GB that it is shipped with: http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.asp...664ac667&pid=3169591

Check out our RAM upgrade guide.

for £25 that is pretty good, as I will be dealing with alot of photos I may consider getting that, from looking at the underside, it may be a case of just removing a middle panel to expose the cpu and memory, and then you can make the switch really quickly and easily.

Hello! Just joined this site. I have had my dell mini for 5 days now and I love it! As far as RAM upgrade, I actually did that right away. I waited 2 weeks for my mini (US) so I had everything ordered to upgrade it when it got here. I ordered G.skill DDR2 4200 with heat sinks off of newegg. It is as simple as taking out the 2 screws, CAREFULLY unsnapping the little cover (yes that small plate has snaps on the edges), popping out the manufacturer RAM chip and plugging in that 2GB beauty. It showed up right away in XP as well as the Bios. That goes contrary to what people have been floating around about the motherboard not supporting anything over 1GB. It definitely supports 2. But I dont think it can handle over 2.

so for someone who just uses their mini for surfing the web and maybe the occasional viewing and editing of documents in open office, is it worth it to upgrade?

I would say so personally, its dead cheap and very quick to upgrade, so its quite nice to get a bit more performance out of it you know?

I agree. Why would you not do so since it such a low cost, and it certainly will speed things up a bit!

If you read all the stuff from Dell the 1 gig limit is there so the system qualifies for a license for Windows XP...
I had speculated that it would be theoretically possible to BIOS lock the system to 1 gig of ram. We have seen lots of users put in the 2 gig of ram without issue... this might change in the future or it may not.
Physically the chipset. can handle the 2 gig without issue.

What would be interesting is for one of the people with the XP lite version to see if the EULA explicitly states that only 1 gig of ram can be used. Any lawyers in the forum that are board that wnad to give the EULA a glance pro bono for the community?

How much of a performance boost do you get from upgrading to 2GB? I'll be running Linux and I can tell you right now with all the apps I usually have open I hover around 700mb memory used.

Also, where did everyone purchase their RAM from? And which brand?

If you don't mind waiting for rebates, Fry's has a 2GB Crucial stick for $12.99 after a $25 rebate.
