Default Intel SSD's for the Mini 9 - 11-15-2008, 12:36 AM

It looks like Intel has some SSD's available in 4GB-16GB sizes that would work in the Dell Mini 9:

http://www.intel.com/design/flash/nand/z-p230/index.htm

Problem is the read/write performance is quoted as 38/10... which doesn't seem very good. The MDD MLC drives are quoted as 70/15, though I think this is with compression turned on, so the real numbers according to jkkmobile are more like 32/12. If so then these are in a similar range, slightly faster reads maybe, slightly slower writes?

It looks like these would physically fit in the Dell Mini 9, and they have the right connector. Would they work? Any reason to consider them rather than the existing STEC or MDD drives?

The 15mb write speed of the MDD drive is considered way too slow. Anything less than that and you're going to hate life.

And finally, the Mini9's PCIe slots are shorter than standard. That card will not fit. Just like the PCIe SSD drives for a Eee will not work in our machines.

Has anyone tried the new X18-M from Intel? I know I have seem one available from places like Mwave. I know you would have to have a decent amount of money to burn. However, it would blow away the performance of all the other 1.8 inch SSDs I've seen people using around here so far. At least according to the specs.

1.8" would work for some of the netbooks like the Aspire One, but not us.
For now, it's looking like the 70/40 speed of the RunCore is going to be our ticket to fame. If they ever ship.. heh

I was under the impression that our drives were 1.8inch form factor drives. Is it that the Intel does not have mount points for the screws to secure the drive? I ask, because I know someone will ask at some other point. Thanks

No, 1.8" drives are the size that's in things like the iPod classic, Acer Aspire One, etc. We have mini PCI-e based hard drives.
