Default Typical OS X install size? - 05-03-2009, 04:59 PM

Hey, does anyone know the typical OS X install size?

I just installed OS X and if I recall the installation noted the install size needed was about 11gb, but when I viewed the hd right after install 14.34 gb is used.

I have not run any updates yet and I loaded OS X 10.5.6.

UPDATE: Resolved. Thanks for the input. I didn't realize there was a forum for OS X until a few days after I posted this so if a moderator wants to move this topic, please do.

yup that's about right for a default osx install.

get monolingual that will strip out unused languages and strip binaries to x86 only. or reinstall and customize there.

plus time machine seems to go and create backups when you aren't looking.

waiting for my 32gb runcore and honest to goodness airport card before trying the install again on my white mini 9

More of a question for the OSX forum - but - I made this mistake the first time around as well. Monolingual/Xslimmer and manual deletion of the printer drivers folder didn't clear as much space as I felt it should, and it made the install seem messy.

Start from scratch and re-install - during the install process, there is an option to customize the install - from that menu, remove printer drivers, languages, and anything else you don't think you'll need.

After doing this my fresh install was around 6.6 gigs (if i remember correctly).

I had good results with Monolingual; it recovered 3.4 GB for me and everything continues to work just fine.
