1. 2GB might be too tight for a normal install, I'm not sure. You might need to look into the "Alternate Install CD" or the minimal CD image (you'll need an ethernet connection during install for this one). I'd avoid OpenOffice if you can, it takes up alot of space.
2. The empty space on the drive will have garbage left over from the files and directories on the NTFS filesystem, but that doesn't matter. You can just create a new partition and filesystem over it. You don't need to zero out the empty space first.
3. I don't think so. Linux is pretty tolerant of strange setups, and won't care about XP Home vs Pro.
4. Are you sure you shrunk the XP partition? I ask because your system is behaving strangely and it's easy to forget to commit partition changes to disk.
