Default Re: Alternative internal bluetooth module - 05-06-2009, 10:12 PM

what is pan networking? I've been playing with the module a bit more and I think I'm 80% sure they sent me bad hardware. I have tried pairing this with my macbook and i can (usually) browse the macbook over bluetooth, but after a short while i will get a message that says "the connection failed or closed." Any ideas before I wait the 6 weeks round trip to try and get a new unit? Thanks

1. check BT enabled in bios
2. if you had another os prior to OSX, then it may have disabled the bt, check OSX forum
3. if you have a dual-boot, like windows, use it to re-enable
4. if you only have OSX, then make sure you plugged in the cable properly (and do #2 above)

It should work ... eventually ... works well for me (bt mouse and headphones) ...

I've tried Mac OS, Windows XP, plugging in the cable one way and then the other. In BIOS bluetooth is enabled and Legacy USB support is disabled. I've tried everything I can think of and it won't recognize that the bluetooth module is even there. Maybe I got a bad one?

Maybe you answered your own question "plugging in the cable one way and then the other" ... might not have been a good idea. :-/ I'm not sure of the pinout, so perhaps that did not kill the module afterall and you did get a "dud". Still, I learned with my wifi 1505 card that it seemed faulty but it was my router that had to be setup to see it properly. Check all variables before you send the module back for RMA.

Which way should the cable be inserted into the mobo?
With the contacts facing up or down? I initially had it facing down but I also tried it facing up.

Bluetooth cable pinout

Down I believe but the connector should be polarized. But looking at the connector, reversal (upside-down insertion into the motherboard) only seems to imply "no connection" and not "reversed connection", i.e the pins could not make contact with the mate. The latter would be bad since pin1 is 3.3V and pin8 is GND. Reversing would have, for a different style of connector, put -3.3V on the PCB thus destroying it. Again, not possible here, I believe.

EDIT: Assumed that when you were in XP, you downloaded the DELL wireless/bt driver to allow Fn F2 to enable the BT device.

I tried to install the driver but when it comes to the part where it tells me to press Fn+F2 or turn on the switch, nothing I do does anything.
Fn+F2 is really Fn+S, isn't it? Fn+2 enables/disables the wireless.
I've double checked the connection on the bluetooth module end as well.

Yes, sorry -> Fn + "2" key enables/disables wireless.

In device manager, does it even recognize the bt card is there?

In win7, I have mouse+headphones, I have these bt related items:

Device manager => Bluetooth Radios => Broadcom 2045 Bluetooth 2.0+EDR USB Device
Device manager => Bluetooth Radios => Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator

Device manager => Human Interface Devices => Bluetooth HID Device
Device manager => Human Interface Devices => Bluetooth Remote Control
Device manager => Network adapters => Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network)
Device manager => Network adapters => Bluetooth Device (RFCOMM Protocol TDI)
Device manager => Sound, video and game controllers => Bluetooth Hands-free audio

Get Device Manager to recognize it first. If you can't then perhaps the hardware is bad.
