Default Mini 9 compatible network cards - 03-11-2009, 08:33 PM

I thought it would be useful to compile a list of compatible (and incompatible) network cards for the Mini 9 to let people know what they should and shouldn't order for their little toys. Please list your network cards, whether it works or not with the Mini 9 and any other issues you encountered.

Broadcom BCM94312MCG
OEM network card in my Mini 9 that was shipped with 8gb/1gb/Ubuntu purchased Feb. 09 from Dell Outlet
Works perfectly with WinXP and Ubuntu
According to some accounts I've read, is not as sensitive as some other cards/brands
Chipset is not currently supported with Linux hacking tools
Ubuntu seems to have some problems connecting to a non-broadcasting network with this card. Takes a minute or more and an extra mouse click to resubmit the password to connect.

Atheros AR5007EG(AR5BXB63); AR2425
Purchased from ebay and shipped from Hong Kong
I have NOT been able to get this card to work or even be recognized in the hardware list of WinXP. Have tried several different drivers, different sequences of software/hardware installation, etc. Nothing. Seems that this particular card is problematic on many platforms.

I thought I'd give it a try since it was only $9.75 shipping included, but at that price, not really worth sending it back to HK. Posted a message elsewhere in the Hardware forum, but no replies. If anyone else thinks they have a trick or technique to try, I'd be interested to hear it. I don't have any other computer to try with this card so don't really know for sure that it is good or bad.

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/cate ... sort=price

AFAIK, all the following Broadcom WLAN Mini-PCIe avail from Dell are compatible w/Mini including Dell Wireless 1395/1397/1490/1505/1510
Some cards like the 1397/1510 are half-height as well as the 1515 which is actually Atheros chipset not Broadcom...

Have had 1395 (default), 1397, 1490, 1510 working in the Mini under XP/Vista using the same Broadcom driver: v5.10.38.26

Intel 5300 - works fine (needs third antenna). I have heard that the Intel 5100 (two antennas) works too. Windows and Linux only - not OS X.

This would be a good place for anyone who has gotten a particular wifi adapter working for an OS that is NOT Windows/Linux/OS X to post information.

What else is there? Solaris? FreeBSD? Is anyone seriously trying to run those on a Mini?

Since I planed to go to OS X I used the Apple Kit for MacPro (after 01/08). Thats an Broadcom Card with 802.11 a/b/g/n and it fits perfectly under mac osx. For the windows part you can use the bootcamp drivers included on the leopard dvd. And by the way: Because this is an kit for getting an mac pro to wifi after already bought it, this card is only availabe to apple service... but here in germany i found an dealer who sold this to me, he didnt care about that and the card only costs 37 euro, thats about 49$. But remember to get the card for mac pro after 01/08, there is another card available for the older mac pro, this one will not work, even it looks the same, but i think it is not a mini card, it seems to be a pci express...

Hi jimg3525

"Atheros AR5007EG(AR5BXB63); AR2425 Purchased from ebay and shipped from Hong Kong"

It works fine for me, is a matter of driver“s

-In Windows use this driver: xp3264-7.6.1.184-whql.zip (just google it)

I didn“t use the "setup.exe" just update wireless driver in that location

Control Panel>System>Hardware>DevicesManager>NetworksAdapt ers>Atheros...

Right-click>Properties>Driver and update it whith the location you unziped the file.

-In Ubuntu 8.10 just Google in ubuntugeek with this text

"new-madwifi-now-supports-ar2425-in-madwifi-trunk-branch" it works fine.

Bye.
