Bad idea: Multiple SD cards in legacy MMC SPI mode(?) - 03-06-2009, 05:45 PM
I don't know if this is possible with the controller chip, device driver(s), or any given modern SD card. At least it used to be that SD cards could switch back to backward compatibility modes to work like older MMC cards. That got me thinking about a few things that I had read about some Nokia 770 Internet Tablet experimenters. One of the experimenters used two MMC cards wired together. This made them work in the old slowest common denominator "SPI" mode, but the 770 then saw two flash drives even though they were wired to the same connector. Herer is some text and a nice page with photos:

Now I don't know if something similar could be done for our use, like an SD plug with a tiny ribbon going to two SD sockets, or perhaps an SD sized adapter card that can take two MicroSD cards, but even if it could, it would be really slow. Then again, it opens up the possibility of an internal expansion (loop the ribbon back into the inside of the case from the SD socket) that would not involve any soldering.
Like I said, probably a bad idea, but I thought I'd add it to the mix. Note too, that with any kind of unsupported hardware experimenting there is always the possibility of damage to the system unit.

This may be something worth looking into: http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/05/than ... st-becaus/
4 SDHC cards on one USB device!
