Default Solderless touchscreen - 02-11-2009, 08:29 AM

I'm keen to give one of these a try, the guy selling them in the uk on ebay hasnt got back to me about whether its got a Vista driver (or better yet, Windows7).

I've had a look at the EETI website which doesnt say much. Their website also implies there are some 'fake' touch screen products out there with the EETI logo on it.

Sooooo, my question to someone who has got one of these running... what operating system are u using, and what drivers come with it ?

Also, does it stick to the normal screen by static, or is it only held on around the edges/bezel? i.e. can u actually tell its laid over the top of the normal screen (not sitting totally flat/rippled/flexing... blah blah ??)

I would also like to know this. Also, I noticed that the instructions say that the controller board has additional USB connections. Are these 5v or 3.3v? If they are 5v, it would make it easy to integrate GPS or anything else while doing this mod.

The material is a stiff plastic. You have to remove the bezel of your LCD, and the digitizer (touch screen) is held in place usually with double-sided tape (yeah, it's basically just held on with scotch tape). Apparently, it's not so thick that you have a hard time getting the bezel back on. If it's anything like the digitizers on touchscreen cellphones (mobile phones), you may notice a difference since you have to look through some extra material to see the LCD. You would never notice that, though, if you never saw it without the digitizer.

Hmmm. Does that make sense??

While some USB devices can run on as little as 3.3v, the standard for USB calls for 5v.

Yes, it looks like they've integrated a hub into the design.
It makes sense really. if you've got the thing open to mod it to THIS extent you're likely to be doing more also!

It seems like a good, practical design that gives some good value. (As long as everything works properly! )

Best I can tell, it connects to the motherboard through the camera socket. I believe it uses this USB connection and then connects the touch screen through a USB hub in the included controller. This is a great idea since it is solderless. However, I bet the camera connection is 3.3v, so unless the controller board has a voltage step up the extra USB ports will be 3.3v.

yeh ive decided to give this a bash, whilst waiting for a working 64gb ssd to shipped to me.
Jkreviews (or some other site) had a link to vista drivers for the eeti touchscreen controller, and they installed ok under windows7 on the mini9...so we're looking ok from that point of view. Wanted to check that first, since the UM740 USB touchscreen i bought earlier this week..its drivers rebooted the mini9 every time i tried to install them, without even being polite enough to blue screen on me.

the guy selling these solderless touchscreens is only a couple of miles from where i am...but he closes at 4pm dammit. will wait until tomorrow... and should either have a touch-mini, or a broken-mini... by the time the weekend is over.

Hello all,
Decided to bite the bullet and get one of these touch screens since noone else seemed to have given it a go on the dell mini9, the solderless one that is. Having read a MsiWind forum however, it appears many people have bought the same item and needed to do some soldering, as the wires were coming off the controller either out of the box, or during installation.

Personally, i had held off buying this as i was more worried about cleaning the mini9 screen and touch screen perfectly and ensuring not a speck of dust could be seen. i.e. before placing them together - as im absolutely an@l about viewing dust between the surfaces, which would prompt me to pull the whole thing apart, clean it and probably get 3x as much dust in between whlst cleaning it again

Got it from ultimate-netbook.co.uk, a.k.a. gps4less on ebay, though since they decided to setup shop in sunny wolverhampton, i just drove on down and picked it up...seemed like a nice enough bunch of people running the shop.

Here's the box
[attachment=2:257kx1t8]DSC_3867.jpg[/attachment:257kx1t8]

Opened up, we see the controller up front, insulating tape to go on the controller and the stylus pen. Driver cd (which i didnt use - downloaded drivers from EETI website) and useless booklet up the back. Screen in the middle.

I found it interesting that there was a seperate printed 2page pamphlet explaining how to use the stylus, but no printed instructions at all on how to install the actual touch screen and/or controller. Its probably on the driver cd, but i just printed the PDF from the shops website:
http://ultimate-netbook.co.uk/Dell/Dell ... ___559.htm

Close up of controller, which will go in spare bay inside the mini9 (assuming you dont have SIM card thingy for internet)..
LHS is the USB input, which connects to the webcam slot on motherboard. In the middle are 3 white USB outputs, one of which will be used to re-connect the webcam to. Wires on RHS go to touch screen ribbon.
