I'm all for the external antenna. Mast is 40' high, should get good reception up there with any number of antenni. So then, a follow on question. I wouldn't be asking questions if I already knew this stuff, but when it comes to computers, wireless, etc. I usually just learn as I need to. I have seen USB antennas, as well as antennas hooked up to USB adapters. In order for an antenna, plugged in via USB, to work on the mini, it must need some sort of driver, correct? Is that it then, no physical modification, splicing into the antenna attachment points, etc? Just a USB antenna, or a USB antenna adapter (coax to usb) and a driver and I'm set? If that is the case I will head to frys and start looking...

the usb adapter uses a SMA type antenna connector. is a universal thing, you can just plug anything on it.
you will also need the driver or connection software for the adapter itself, or if you prefer, run the antennas directly from the wifi mini card usind a u.fl to sma pigtail and then conecting the same cable and external antenna. maybe you will need a coaxial cable adapter of some type to run the cable in the lenght you will need across the mast
i just bought this on ebay:

I also would like to do a similar mod. However, I would like to have external nipple mountings for my 3G antennas, as opposed to the WiFi ones. I frequently work in a retail premise that can get HSPDA reception, but only by moving around a bit. This was OK when I had my old Vaio and my soap-on-a-rope HSPDA modem, but now I use my Mini, I'm more restricted.
So, first things first, can you extend the 3G aerials in such a way? If so, can anyone point me in the direction of some nipples...
