I got an 8 Gigabyte "Class 6" SDHC card on sale locally. I reformatted it NTFS since it will always stay in the built in slot and I don't care if anything else can read it. Then I enabled compression. I moved the "My Documents" directory to it and use it for storing my working files. The directory structure came out looking like this:
Dell WebCam Central
This way I have all of the main C: flash drive for software installations, the system swap file, and temporary files. I'm trying to keep a bit of unused space on it so that the wear leveling controller in the C: drive's flash can move things around a lot and hopefully last a long time. Of course the "Drives" don't cost much these days, so it really isn't much of a worry.

I'd use it for data storage - especially large media files. Applications generally aren't huge and you might need them in the absence of a specific file.
If you do want to put applications on it, alternative OS's would be a good selection. You don't need that all the time, so you could put your Mac OS X, Linux, Vista, etc. on there and only plug it in when you need it. If it is an infrequently used, alternate OS, then you can probably live with the limited SDHC performance hit you will take vis-a-vis the internal SSD drive.

They're often pseudo PCMCIA or mini-SCSI interfaces for some reason.
