For reference, it looks like OS X partitioning with GPT always aligns to 4KB.

Yeah, it sounds like just changing the cluster size. I've been changing my cluster & stripe size on my Raptors for a longtime. I think 300% gain is a bit overstated. But who knows.

EDIT: I am reading through the 14 page thread and Vista/Windows 7 OS partitions it correctly. This would benefit XP users.

If you do the 4K cluster size just know that files over 4K will be split into several or many 4K blocks and then re-assembled when request for it is sent.

Hey,

Any way to do this by booting from a USB disk? I don't have access to a USB CD ROM drive, and cant hook the SSD up to another PC... all the methods I have read about (including the Vista Recovery Disk, which for some reason PeToUSB won't let me copy) require an optical drive...

Cheers,

Suman

You'd need 2 usb drives, one to boot from and one to clone too, I think you should be able to do it with UBCD on the small usb and then use one of the cloning utilities to write the image to the larger usb (it will have to be at least as big as the data on your drive if not as big as the entire drive)

UBCD: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Or my thought is to install XP to a usb harddrive, create an iso of the SSD and then restore it after the reformat.

I use a Debian installer CD to do my 4K-aligned partitioning for XP, but it could just as easily be done with the USB install image.

Woohoo got it working

Firstly used this method to boot to the XP install partition manager and delete all the existing partitions. Reason being that DISKPART cannot align a drive which already has partitions - but annoyingly cannot delete exisiting partitions, lol.

So then I used this to make a bootable Vista USB key and copied over the files from the "Vista Recovery ISO" (don't have a link for that). Then followed this guide to align the drive to 32k.

FINALLY, I returned to the initial USB key which I made (with the XP install disc on it), and continued to install XP as per the guide in the first link. I made sure to use the existing partition and only do an NTFS quick format (to preserve the alignment of the partition).

Working well and just got to the Windows desktop now will keep you updated, but for the moment XP feels a lot quicker than silly Ubuntu!!

Cheers,

Suman

[edit] Forgot to say, this is with a heavily nLite'd XP Pro (hence the quickness I imagine!). If you are going to do this, DO NOT remove ā€œManual Install and Upgradeā€ under Operating System Options! Otherwise the method will not work!

Ok instead of deleting the partiions ..instead i use diskpart and after ther select disk option i use CLEAN ALL and then disk part cleans the disk.. but dont do anything until it finishes ...in other words wehn it goes to next command line..then follow the rest of the directions..reason being i could not get the partitions to delete..Jeff
