Default STEC 16 GB SSD - SLC or MLC? - 01-30-2009, 07:58 PM

I've got a mini 9 with a stock STEC 16 GB SSD. Does anyone know whether this is using SLC or MLC flash memory? I checked the STEC site but was unable to find this information. Apparently SLC memory can handle roughly an order of magnitude more writes before failure.

It'll be interesting to see how long these SSD drives hold up under 'normal' use. Unlike a traditional HD using magnetic media the memory cells used in SSD drives have a definite lifespan before they are defunct. Anywhere between 10,000 to > 500,000 write cycles. The drives employ 'wear leveling' algorithms to assure all the bits of the drive wear evenly, but eventually they will fail.

Probably a moot point anyway, as even if the drives only last a couple of years there will be something better at that time.

Single Layer Cell is substantially more expensive. A scant 32gb's of SLC goodness is about $420.00 You also get some sizzling performance. (Maybe with my rebate I'll augment my RAID array with a couple of these. Or not. Depends on whether or not the stimulus check gets approved :geek: )
# Sequential Access - Read: up to 250 MB/s
# Sequential Access - Write: up to 170 MB/s ... 6820167013

Whereas Multi Layer Cell is fairly cheap, but much slower. Also much cheaper. 32gb of MLC will run you about 75 dollars.
# Sequential Access - Read: 40 MB/sec (max)
# Sequential Access - Write: 15 MB/sec (max) ... 6820609351

(However that little super talent drive gets smoked by the Runcore, so I'd say buy the Runcore MLC SSD)

Netbooks -> Mini 9 - 2gb Gskill low latency - Ubuntu 8.04
Asus Eee 701 4g - 1gb - Ubuntu 8.04.1
Desktops -> Phenom Quad @ 2.8 - 16gb - 4x Raptor X in RAID 0 - 2x 4870X2
Brisbane 1.9 @ 2.7 - 4gb - 80gb
Many others, all Linux.

There's also no reason to think that the SSDs used won't last more than a few years.

So we can do away with the misinformation too.

I'm tempted to move this to the "beginner's" section.
