Default Re-purpose my Dell Mini 9 with a project? - 12-28-2013, 02:11 AM

Well, it's 2013 and I haven't used my poor little Dell Mini 9 in years. It's just not fast enough anymore for modern websites, I find. Mine only has 1GB of RAM and 1.6GHz/533Mhz FSB/512K cache). Has anyone figured out a way to pull the guts out and give it a full upgrade? Or is going up to 2GB of RAM the only thing I can really do?

If I can't turn this into a functional laptop again, can I re-purpose somehow? Are there any fun projects someone can do step-by-step if they haven't done much with circuitry/electronics, etc? I've built my desktop PC, but that's honestly just buying parts and plugging them in properly, haha. The Dell Mini 9 is just such an awesome size, I don't want to waste it.

Thanks!

It should be perfectly functional - I don't have any issues with mine. 2GB RAM will help some, but 1GB should be adequate. You can't do anything else to it. It's not particularly fast, and the 600px screen height poses a problem for some applications, but you can always attach an external monitor.

You can "pull the guts out", sure. But upgrade? No - as I said, you can't do anything other than add RAM as far as upgrades. You can't change the CPU or graphics. You can browse the forum for projects people have used their Mini 9 for.

With XP support ending, I was about to get rid of mine. The main thing I used it for was to access my iTunes library on Match and Airplay to multiple zones (an iPad still can't do that). I decided to Hackintosh it with OS X 10.6.8 and I swear it's faster than it's ever been. Safari is pretty responsive, have Spotify on there too. Sure, it's slow compared to a modern machine, but still a very useful thing. Don't see me getting rid of it any time soon now. Worth a go if you've never tried it.
