Default Will a 4GB Ram chip work? - 10-15-2008, 03:05 PM

Will the Mini 9 be able to see/use it?

What operating systems would be able to use it (XP, Leopard, Ubuntu)?

Newegg has a G.SKILL 4GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) for $170.

The 2GB is a published limit by Intel on their Atom chips. If Intel can make the chip address 4 GB, they would have bragged about it and use it as marketing attraction. This is probably just an artificial limit they designed into the chip so it doesn't compete with the more expensive chip series they sell.

The 1 GB limit that Dell imposed is because they don't want the Mini to be as capable as as their bigger Inspiron or XPS lines. Infact, Dell's marketing strategy is to convince people to buy 2 laptops, 1 full size, 1 mini to be fully functional.
I believe Microsoft put a limit on licensing XP to netbooks that are sold with 1 GB max, to prevent the netbooks from making Vista look even more crappier than it is.

from what i recall reading the 1 gig limit is put there by Microsoft as a requirement for still being able to sell XP to put on the netbook.

The 1GB limit is purely a Microsoft licensing limitation; if manufacturers want to use XP, Microsoft specifically states that they can only have a maximum of 1GB (it was originally set at 512MB but they thought better of it). Some of the other netbook manufacturers offer 1GB with XP but 2GB as an option for Linux because no such restriction exists for Linux.
