Default No Bluetooth in 7 - 12-08-2011, 04:00 AM

Hey guys. Quick little background, I work at a local computer shop. Customer came by with a Dell Mini 9. SSD was dead, she said just toss it. I shop around, find a new battery, new SSD and I have myself a pretty nice little Mini 9. Anyway, the new SSD arrived today. I loaded a stripped down copy of Windows 7 on it and got pretty much everything going just fine. No errors in Device Manager, all the primary goodies work, and it's pretty snappy. (I also popped in a 2GB stick of RAM). The only problem is bluetooth! I've not torn this thing down enough to see the module but I have booted it to a copy of Ubuntu 10.10 and seen/enabled bluetooth, so I know this unit has it. I tried a driver pack from Dell and got the "Press FN-F2 to enable bluetooth". I've got the Wireless Select Switch software installed but it only sees wifi. Bluetooth is enabled in the bios. Right now I'm out of ideas. This isn't a must but I would like to have it working since I do have a few bluetooth devices around.

Well, you've done everything I can think of. Did you test to see if the BT actually worked under Ubuntu?

I haven't tried connecting to it, but it shows up and drivers load. I'm using it at work to screw around online, but maybe later I can boot to Linux and try connecting to something. Even if I can't get it to work, I'm still very happy with it. Now if they just hadn't put the apostrophe key where they did!

Ah, you want the US-International keyboard. Assuming you can find one at a decent price, which is unlikely at this point. You can probably find a small and cheap USB BT adapter - no idea why you can't get it to come on in Windows.

Hmm...well I don't plan on spending any more money on this laptop so I'll just learn to deal with this keyboard. It's not too bad, just takes some getting used to.
As for bluetooth, I despise having any type of dongle on my computers. I have no issue tearing this laptop apart to install a new bluetooth adapter if I have to. I actually just tried Ubuntu again (just booting from a flash drive again). Bluetooth is detected but won't fully enable. So I guess driver issues or simply a bad module. I've actually got some bluetooth modules from other various other laptops including some Dells...maybe I'll pop this thing open to see if it matches up...
Oh yeah, one other possibility I guess... I have a heavily modified copy of Windows 7 running on here with a tremendous number of generic drivers left out. Now I've installed all the latest drivers for the chipset/video/NIC, etc with no errors showing.
Well... I'll probably try a few more things before I just say screw it. Honestly, I'd probably never use bluetooth :P I installed a module in one of my other laptops and pretty much never use it either ^^;
