Default Re: Is a backlit keyboard mod possible? - 03-08-2009, 06:43 PM

Not only is it possible, it may be one of my 'must have' mods. I fully intend to use the mini for surfing and work in dimly lit areas.

I vaguely remember an old-school modder that did this with a PS2 keyboard. He added an EL panel, batteries & inverter, and made the light viewable with a very clever but time intensive mod. He popped each and every key out, cut out the shape of the letter with a hot knife and filled in the spaces with a colored semi-transluscent resin. Looked pretty shoddy, really, but it worked.

I like the EL panel solution. I have found a source of inverters that are really tiny. They take a 3 volt input, so I am checking to see if 3.3v is too much.

The keys are another matter. Having an EL glaring out from the spaces between the keys would make them harder to see, not easier. We need to mask the spaces between the keys and get the light to filter through, somehow. I don't have my mini yet, but if the keys are standard Dell style, they are opaque black plastic with applique'd letters. Zero light transmission.

The custom nature of the keys on the mini will make finding different ones impossible, I'll wager.

Default Mini 9 Backlit Keyboard - 05-23-2009, 06:09 AM

If the mini 9 had backlit keyboards in some builds why wouldn't a backlit upgrade option be pretty easy to do?

I was going to get the backlit keyboard but suddenly when i ordered mine it didn't seem to have that option anymore.

Anyone know if they aren't doing backlit anymore or if it is possible to get whatever is needed to install them?
