If we could get someone to manufacture some translucent keycaps, tthe EL option would look nice.
Also a thin sheet of plexi/perspex/whatever-its-called with some tiny white LEDs around the edges with similar key shaft holes and translucent keycaps would do the trick.
Another weird idea: What about keycaps made out of the new NASA enhanced glow in the dark plastic? Or even just key legends printed in the same sort of stuff.
Want to get weirder? Use fluorescing paint for the key cap legends and mount a keyboard "light" that is a longwave UV LED - You want to avoid the shorter wavelength ones for safety reasons.
Cheap passive version: A screen-wide piece of aluminized mylar attached to a piece of "L" shaped plastic that sticks to the top of the screen lid and sticks out above the screen a couple of centimeters. Add removable sticky like Velcro so that it attaches above the screen and reflects a small amount of the screen light back down toward the keyboard area. No extra power consumption, just tacky looking.

What if you take apart one of those fiber optic light toys and run individual fibers up to each key of the keyboard with one LED hidden inside the laptop? It would look like each key has its own spotlight.

Instead of opening it and soldering led's etc why not make glow in the dark replaceable keys for the keyboard? wouldn't that be easier? pop the keys out and replace them?
it would be cool if they made white mac looking keys for the keyboard to match my might mouse (wireless) and my wireless apple keyboard.
