Most computers use hard drives to store data. The Mini 9 uses flash memory chips on a card (a solid state drive).

The main reason to upgrade is if your original drive failed, or if you want one with a larger capacity.

As for RAM, just about any normal laptop-sized DDR2 module should work.

The major reason people upgrade the SSD is to get more capacity, though one can also buy SSDs that are faster than the Dell stock model. If you want to do this, you need to make sure it is a model that is made explicitly for the Dell Mini 9, since it is a custom design. Forum sponsor MyDigitalDiscount.com sells them.

For RAM, you need DDR2 RAM for notebooks in a 200-pin SODIMM form rated at 533MHz (PC2-4300) or higher. Higher won't be any faster but that's often all that is available.

It all depends on what you want to do. From the private message you sent me, you have an 8GB SSD which is on the small side, especially if you want to run OS X, which you also mentioned.

A 16GB SSD would be the smallest I could recommend (besides, you already have the next smallest size.) The RunCore models compatible with your Mini are here. Another brand that is popular is SuperTalent, which you can find here, but I have been reading more and more complaints about these and I hesitate to recommend them now.

I also looked at Newegg, but they were out of stock of all the SuperTalent drives and they don't carry RunCore.

For RAM, any of those listed here will do.

You also asked about installing OS X. That is discussed extensively in the Mac OS X section of the forum. I will caution you that this is what I would consider an "advanced" topic and if you go into it blindly you will just get frustrated.
