install Ubuntu Netbook Edition directly over XP / NO USB Drive - 01-22-2011, 01:54 PM
I'm about to buy a second-hand DELL Mini 9 netbook here in Spain where I'm living and teaching (and my laptop just go stolen).
My problem with it is that it has Spanish Windows on it....
But on the website Download | Ubuntu it says I need a bootable USB Key to trial it first...
Isn't there a way to just install it directly with no USB Key?
thanks for any help or advice

I can imagine a "dance of partitions" enabling you to install Ubuntu over Windows, without any external media. Basically, you'd shrink the Windows partition somehow, then essentially put the Ubuntu USB installer in a partition in the freed space, then boot off it. Then you'd install Ubuntu over the Windows partition, then delete the "installer" partition and grow Ubuntu in to the installer's space...
... or you could try shrinking the Windows partition, then installing Ubuntu within Windows via Wubi, then upgrading to a normal install in a partition in the freed space, then deleting the Windows partition and moving/growing the Ubuntu partition (possibly out-of-date info here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=438591)...
....but a USB drive (1GB or larger) or a USB optical drive will be easiest.
Also, be aware that when using a USB drive, creating the installer will probably overwrite any and all data on the drive.

There is no way that it is worth it to try and install from the drive you are installing to. Is it possible? Definitely. I don't know where you can buy flash drives in Spain, but all you need is a 1gb flash drive to make the installer. Unetbootin my preferred program in windows for making usb installers but I am sure the one provided on the ubuntu website works fine.

You can also use the Universal USB Installer from pendrivelinux.com
