Default About the WWAN card - 01-13-2009, 08:00 PM

I just ordered a refurbished mini from dell's outlet since I wanted a small netbook (in addition to a regular laptop). I'm curious about the internal WWAN card. Does all mini units come with it even tho you don't request WWAN services? Or is it an empty slot in the machine?

I'm looking forward to integrating a GPS unit in there.

Also, any idea if there's a dedicated GPS that fits in the WWAN slot rather than modding? I'm not that experience with soldering.

If you don't order a model with the WWAN card, there may not even be a socket for it - just some empty solder pads. Perhaps they're making them now with the socket on all versions, but perhaps not.

You'll need to look under the item's description to see if it has a WAN slot. FYI, you're going to need to spend about $380+ to get the WAN slot, units cheaper than that normally don't have the slot (it will say in the description "No WAN slot".

I just looked through the Dell Outlet and noticed they are now selling the 9 with not only the WAN card slot, but also the AT&T WAN card.

Module,Assembly,Base,WO/WWAN 910

looks like there's no WWAN.

So it's just going to be empty space in that area? Maybe more room for me to do other upgrades... Anyone have a photo without a WANN card?

I haven't received mine yet. I'm planning to mod it somewhat. But soldering is still new to me. That's why I got it refurbed, so I can't FUBAR without too much damage.

Well... for what it's worth, my Dell Support Page says this for the service tag on my machine:

Module,Information,OBSIDIAN BLK,Color
Module,Dual In-line Memory Module,512M,800MHZ,DDR2 Inspiron
Module,Solid State Drive,8GB Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment,STEC,910

and there's no mention of bluetooth nor a webcam, however I got a white unit with 1gig of ram and 32gig SDD, with bluetooth and a webcamera. I don't even want to think about what will happen if I have to send this in under warranty!

Did anyone try this one?

I'm not sure if it's work or not.
