It can be done. Several people have added a USB hub internally and plugged in various devices, including a GPS receiver. All you have to do is solder wires to various places to pick up the power and signal lines. It's also possible to tap the webcam connector for this.

Indeed, there's a sticky thread Integrated GPS on my Mini 9 right in this forum section.

can i take the power and signal lines from one of the usb ports on the side (solder the connectors internally" would that work to the USB lead (wires) on the usb hub?

is there a way of using a SD card for the internal HDD or not?

No, you cannot tap one of the existing USB ports. But there are power and signal lines available - read the threads.

The SD card cannot be booted from, so no, it cannot replace the internal SSD.

Oh, if that's what you want, then I suppose you can do that. Seems a waste, though - it's probably easier to tap the other points on the board and get an additional port.

By all means use the internal port!
If you don't have a 3G card in there you have an unused port just waiting to uh...well, be USED!
Do a little digging on this board and you will find a wealth of worthy projects doing just that.

Enjoy!
