Project: Plasti-Dip the entire shell... - 01-11-2009, 09:45 AM
First post here, and it's kindof an ambitious one. I ordered a Mini off the outlet (fully specced and $260 shipped with coupon!), and am looking forward to playing around with OSX86 on it. I've been a Mac guy for the last 6 years, so I will be running the OS as my main system.
I do have a couple reservations on the glossy outer shell though... so I was thinking of a rather strange mod, that has the potential for awesomeness.
I'm looking to take the laptop apart (seems quite easy from the manual and pictures on this forum), and coat the outer LCD, and palm rest with Plasti-Dip (http://www.plastidip.com/). The end game is to have a finish similar to the Black Macbooks (Which they don't make anymore). Something matte, and slightly grippy to the touch. Additionally this would cover up all the gaudy stickers, and make a nice matte look on the laptop. I'm not quite sure how it would hold up under repeated use, but this guy ( http://metku.net/index.html?sect=vie...grip/index_eng ) tried it on some other things and it seemed to work just fine.
Finally after it was done I was thinking of placing a tiny Apple sticker in the middle of the lid and having a 'macbook mini 9' type deal. My only real concern is that the coating will add a millimeter or so of thickness, and things won't quite fit together as well as they did.
I'd appreciate any thoughts, and if anybody has any experience with this product, or the process of painting the Mini!
Edit: Upon further research, Vinyl Dye may be the way to go. It won't give me the 'feel' I want, but the look would be similar....

Member cmarcho did a rubbery red finish on his Mini 9. Here's a link to his original thread:
(added later: He used Plasti-Dip, but he just did his lid.)

So I have found something on the interwebs, and it definitely makes the case for me to find some way to get the buttons and trackpad black:
So I am thinking that a vinyl dye for the palmrest, bezel, and maybe the glossy backside. Depending on how well the dye works, I may use it on the trackpad buttons. As for the trackpad itself; I am not 100% sure on whether or not a single layer of plastic dye will leave it Fubar, but I suppose I would be willing to try. I believe if it is thin enough, it should work completely fine. Does anybody know about the workings of a trackpad? Does it function via capacitance, or another method?
