Question SuperTalent and new Ram -- Please Help! - 08-28-2010, 06:18 AM

Hi All!

Finally I gave up and got a new SuperTalent ssd for my mini after the stock one seemed to have died on me. Anyhow....I have 2 hardware related questions:

1.) I'm thinking of upgrading the ram to 2gb, so which would be the best ram I can get for the lowest price for the mini 9? What are the specs of that ram? (I would like to know the specifics so that I can directly look for that model) Also, which would be a good recommendation for the brand name for the ram? And where can I purchase it?

2.) I just recently bought the SuperTalent ssd and have been using that for about a month or so, has anyone been having speed problems that with by the way? I have been having alot of issues in terms of speed with it. Everytime I try to browse or try to open multiple folders at a time, it gets stuck for about 10 to 20 seconds and then comes back to normal. Is there anyway I can repair or correct this problem?

Thanks!

Which exact model of SuperTalent SSD did you buy? Does the part number end with GFDL (good) or GHDL (bad)?

The brand of RAM doesn't matter, as long as it is a well-known name. The specs you want are laptop DDR2, 200-pin SODIMM, at least 533MHz (PC2-4200) (faster is ok but won't improve performance). newegg.com currently is offering a G.Skill model for $43.99 plus shipping - this is an ok price.

Thanks for responding Holmes! This is the ssd I got/using: Super Talent 32 GB MLC Half Mini 2 PCIE Solid State Drive FEM32GFDL. I made sure I got the good one. But it's still slow for some reason. Slower than the stock one that crashed!

Regarding the ram, does upgrading the ram help at all, in terms of speed and multitasking? I'm currently have Windows xp sp3 as the OS, the same OS I was using on the stock too. Also, the ram specs you mentioned, do most laptops/desktops use that ram too? Just wondering to see if I could find a spare somewhere instead of buying one.

Thanks!

Laptops use the same memory but desktops do not...and yes adding the extra RAM will help with multi-tasking and speed..the more RAM you have the more programs you can open at the same time without having to pull memory away from the programs that are already open..extra memory is ALWAYS good, I never have really heard of any complaining of having too much memory...its like having too much disk space...more is always good

PS. dont get me wrong you are not gonna see a difference like night and day but it will help quite a bit

Good point about the RAM upgrade. You won't see overly dramatic changes, but your OS will run a little smoother and multi-tasking will just work without any errors. I recommend doing the upgrade.

When I bought my 2GB RAM stick, I got the Kingston HyperX (or something like that.) When I bought it a year ago it was ~$25 at Newegg.

Regarding your SSD, I think you might have gotten a defective one. I have the same SSD and I don't experience anything like you mentioned in your previous post. I'm no expert, but I think you should just RMA it and have them send you a new one just to be sure.

memory needed:

any DDR2 SODIMM (laptop memory chip) that runs at 533 MHz (DDR2-4200) or faster.

it will not run faster than 533mhz in the Mini 9 though

Thanks rrfranczak3, R2DMP, and eugene for your helpful responses!!

As you all said, I'll go ahead and try to find a good RAM for a good price. I was wondering if the upgrade would do any good because, I'm a programmer and was able to code pretty well with the stock ssd and 1 gb of ram that came with the mini. But with the combo I have right now, it seems that I am having a tough time with just browsing sites like youtube and such. I wonder how it would be when I try to code!

Ummm....I really hope this isn't a defective ssd R2DMP. I was able to get most, if not all, the programs up and running on this one similar to the stock one I had before. Are the SuperTalent ssd's supposed to be as fast as the Runcores or the stocks ssd's? Or slower than both of those? The only reason I chose SuperTalent is because of the scary post I saw around this forum about how Runcores seemed to be failing while used in the minis. And I sooo don't feel like going through the trouble of reinstalling another ssd and start all over again, especially since school has started already! Do you guys have any other suggestions regarding the slowness I'm facing with this ssd?

Thanks.

I still have the original SSD in my Mini 9 it's over two years old now,- maybe I've just been lucky I don't know, I'm certainly no computer expert. It's only 8gb, but I try and keep it 50% freed-up but putting most things on my SD card, (which I leave in permanently), and movies and data I don't need to access too often , on my HDD. I use it about 4 or 5 hours everyday, and I use a fan cooler always. I think The Mini 9 is brilliant, mine is very quick, and I love it to bits.

Since I got stuff I constantly need eugene, I'm finding it hard to put the files elsewhere to free up the drive. I know how you feel about it though, it's pretty awesome for such a tiny thing to be so cool!

I have a opinion related question for you guys...which brand would you pick for ram? Kingston or Crucial (<< those two are the only brand names I've heard alot...so I was thinking of going with one of them). If you guys have different brands that you like please let me know, but please explain why you like it! Would appreciate if you do the explainations!

Also, I found some for pretty cheap I guess, do these look right in terms of specs?
Kingston ValueRAM 2GB 667MHz PC2-5300 DDR2 Notebook Memory
Crucial 2GB 256Mx64PC2-5300 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory
Crucial Technology 2GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-6400 Memory Module
Kingston ValueRAM 2 GB 800MHz PC2-6400 DDR2 CL5 SODIMM Notebook Memory
Kingston ValueRAM 2 GB 667MHz PC2-5300 DDR2 SODIMM Memory
Crucial 2GB 204-PIN PC3-8500 SODIMM DDR3 Memory Module

Obviously depending on the specs, the prices were varying.

Thanks.
