Default Going wifi n on the mini 9... got some questions? - 08-04-2010, 06:05 AM

OK guys i got a wifi N card out of a macbook pro.... i popped it in my mini 9 using 2 antennas (theres 3 ports on the AR5BXB72 wifi card - Atheros 5008 based) and was amazed at the increase in signal strength of AP's around me... and i have always been amazed at the stock broadcom card! Needless to say, will i gain anything on the macbook wifi card with a 3rd antenna for just 54g wifi use? Why do they need 3 antennas? and if a 3rd antenna will be beneficial will these work?

Thanks.

It's definitely possible to get good performance out of two antennas, especially if you're just using G, but all the high-end Mini PCIe N cards use three.

I don't know if the linked antenna will improve your signal, but it seems like it would at least "work" (it should plugin to the card).

wish I could try the 'n' on my Mini 10, I only have a 'g' router and all the other stuff on the network is all 'g' also, doesnt really pay to upgrade at this point because the REAL difference is the speed of your ISP/Cable coming in to the cable modem, it doesnt really matter how fast you can get the data to the router if after that the cable modem bogs it down anyway

the only reason im going wifi n on my mini 9 even though my home network is G... is the fact that i got the apple wifi n card for free and i saw an increase in signal strength on g networks when i put it in with 2 antennas.
