Default Swapping the n270 processor for a 330 - 07-25-2010, 12:32 AM

Hello,

I am new to the mini-world (just got mine from Dell a couple days ago)... And I was wondering; has anybody has looked into swapping the Atom N270 processor for a dual core 330? I took a quick look at the Intel data sheets and it looks like it is pin for pin compatible. I recognize the power cost (and associated heat issue), but still...

On s secondary note, I am looking at getting a SuperTalent 32GB drive (the new/fast version) but have read a lot of positive talk about the RunCore (Pro IV - not the lite version) drives. Is the (real world) performance much different?

This little keyboard will take some getting used to!

Derek

The CPU on a notebook/netbook MB is soldered in place and not intended to be user-replaceable. You are stuck with the 270.

I'm not aware of anyone who's upgraded the CPU on the Mini 9.

Not only that, but the 945GSE chipset doesn't support the 330 and I think the pinout is different.

There is not much difference between the RunCore Pro IV and the SuperTalent GFDL drive in terms of performance.

The fact that it is a BGA is only an inconvenience... As long as you have the appropriate tools, it is a replaceable device. I have a local company that specializes in BGA removal re-balling and replacement.

However, upon taking a detailed look, there are a few pins which are different between the two processors... 20 pins actually. That is probably a deal breaker, even if the chipset will work with the 330 (I am not sure why it wouldn't).

Thanks for the reply on the flash drive... There is so much info on all the different drives it gets to be a bit overwhelming.

The 330 runs at a higher bus speed than the 945GSE chipset can support and, as you note, its pinout is different. The 330 is designed for an "entry-level desktop" or "nettop" and is supported by the 945GC chipset.

I bought the Runcore Pro IV T-Style version and let me tell you; it is like night and day. I thought it was just a bunch of bull that the upgraded SSD made performance improvements. I just bought it for the extra storage but now I realize that the storage bump is second best to the massive speed boost I got. Turning my laptop on and off in a matter of seconds is a really really cool thing.

@the awkening
so the Pro IV is a worthy upgrade? when you say improvements, is that when compared to the original Runcore that came with the Mini 9s?
know of anything better than this at a similar price?
sorry for all the questions. was about to start a brand new thread asking about this but then came across your post...
thank you

Unfortunately new SSDs are quite expensive at the moment, but on a lot of systems they are the bottle neck for certain operations. On My Mini 9 the SSD has pretty much died and now it's really sluggish.

If you're going to be using your Mini 9 long term, I'd definitely recommend the upgrade.
