Default Mini 9 USB fan mod - 05-21-2010, 08:13 AM

Okay so I'm walking through CompUSA yesterday just browsing when I come across a dual fan setup that looks about the size of the Mini9's access panel so I compared it (I had my mini9 with me) and it is about a centimeter short on each end of the longer side, but otherwise seemingly perfect and it was only 6 bucks so I bought it.

I'm no electrical expert so what I would like to know is a usb port capable of supplying the unit's power needs. Each fan is is 12v DC @ .1Amp. Logic says no 5v < 12v or does it have to do with the amps because in that case the usb 500ma should be good, but like I said I don't really know electrical, although I do have the basic soldering skills needed

Fan Info Here:

I would love anyone's and everyone's opinion
Thanks,

Krazykral

USB @5V won't work, it has to be a 12V supply.
Wouldn't be worth the bother anyway, the Mini doesn't really need fans and they wouldn't do much good blowing out the bottom. For active ventilation to work it would have to blow out the side or rear.

I agree with Fox Mulder - not only will this not work, but it is pointless. Your best bet for keeping a Mini 9 cool is to allow more airflow under the base, such as by elevating the rear or using an "open air" stand.

Okay thanks everyone. I do have a high capacity battery so that does keep it elevated.

Thanks

Hi: how did you get your dell mini 9 to recognise and charge your high capacity battery? My mini 9 refuses to recognise the 8 cell battery that I bought. thanks

The 8-cell BetterPower battery that MyDigitalDiscount sells works well with the newer BIOS levels - at least it does for me. An older one I bought does not unless I use A04 or older.

yep I did the same thing a holmes flash to an older bios. But just so you know if you want to charge your battery after you're on battery power you need to plug in the cable then remove the battery and put it back in
